A what if question...
« on: May 24, 2008, 02:49:56 AM »
Hello all,

IF the Dynasty had not fallen and Alexis had become Tsar where would he have lived? One wing was sealed and shut from Alexander III, one was a guest wing, one was his Father's wing and one his Mother's and family rooms. What do we think he would have done? Opened the Alexander III rooms or used one of the others or another palace? The practice of shutting up rooms when a Tsar died does mean that over time one runs out of rooms that can be used for private and living purposes. It seems by 1917 space was at a premium.

Hope I am allowed to ask this and apologize if not.

The pracrice of preserving the rooms of the deceased as a sort of memorial was not uncommon, but there was never any guarantee it would survive subsequent generations.  Queen Victoria preserved "Dear Albert's" rooms in all their residences, but after her death they were all eventaully refurbished and occupied.  IF the revolution had not happened and the Romanovs remained on the throne, there is no reason to be believe eventaully Alexander III's rooms wouldn't have been occupied.

Whether or not Alexis would use the Alexander Palace as a residence is impossible to tell.  Under normal circumstances, there's no reason to believe his father wouldn't still be alive and reigning when Alexis came of age and married; I would think he and his wife would establish their own home.  There really was no shortage of palaces they could use.

I didn't know Alexander III's wing was sealed and shut.  Does that mean no one absolutely went in that wing?  Is that the entire right wing?

The AIII rooms were not sealed and shut. The Dowager Empress Marie contunued to used them when visiting. They were just kept the same. There would have plenty of room at the Winter Palace for the hier's own apartments, and after marriage, a palace of his own would have been found in the City for him. As for the AP itself, his childhood rooms could have been remodeled easily  for a single young man, and the Catherine Palace had plenty of apartments available for larger accomodation.

After reading many of the other topics on this board, it seems there would have been plenty of palatial homes in St. Petersburg and Moscow that would have been suitable.  Until I became interested in the Alexander Palace, I never knew about all the beautiful buildings and mansions in Russia!  A guy working at the Subway Sandwich Shop in my town (Asheville, NC) is from Russia, and of course I asked him if he had ever been to the Alexander Palace, and he said yes, but no details. I felt like maybe he was thinking of a different palace, or was not in a talkative mood.

I believe that after N&A permanently moved into the left wing of the palace, the right wing was used as guest quarters. From what I understand GD Elisabeth, and other relatives, stayed there when visiting Tsarskoe Selo...

:-\  What a great question. Really given the very poor health of Alexei and the poor prognosis I believe he wouldn't have married or ruled for long if at all.  And also given the family focus on the Alexander Palace he possibly would have wanted to stay there. The AIII wing was used for Grand Duchess Ella and the Dowager Empress as well as other family members--the Pavel children Maria and Dmitri so it would seem natural for continued use to take place. A further question would be who would have succeeded Alexei if he didn't survive to marry and have issue? Queen Victoria's son Leopold survived to marry and have children but that was a rarity and he didn't live long after the births of the children.

I don`t think Alexie would live longer then maby 20 if lucky 25. Probebly he would die before his father.

But where would he live... Probebly the palace where they livd

This is a rare picture of Alexei riding that tricycle.  I suspected he did not like the bike and never ride it after the formal pictures with his family.

I have about 9 photos of Aleksei riding his tricycle. Let me know if you'd like to see them, and I'll post them to the Looking for photos IV thread.

On second thought, just go to this thread: Imperial Bicycles. Nena and I have posted all our tricycle photos there already.

Thanks Nikolai. I did not know how to separate the photographs for each! The Arch-Ruin is near the White Tower?
Спасибо Николай. Я не знаю, как к отдельной фотографии для каждого! Арка-Руина находится вблизи Белой Башни?

It is behind the White tower. In in it there lived boatswain Derevenko, and after revolution before war ITSELF КУЧУМОВ (on the second floor). Children Деревенько leave " the apartment ".

Она находится за Белой башней. Именно в в ней жил боцман Деревенько, а после революции до войны САМ КУЧУМОВ ( на втором этаже). Дети Деревенько выезжают из "своей квартиры".
