Yay, I subject I can post on!
If y'all won't mind, I'll just sum up what some of you said here.
There were five dogs that, over the course of time, belonged to the Imperial children. Shibzik, Jemmy, the two Ortinos, and Joy.
Shibzik was a Japanese Chin who died of a brain tumor in 1912-1914, I believe (if someone could clear this up I'd be extremely grateful). Jemmy was a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a gift to Tatiana from Anna Vyrubova in 1915-ish. At that time, she already had Ortino, and Anastasia took care of Jemmy and was therefore "her" dog. It is believed he died with Anastasia in 1918. The remains of a dog that Gilliard identified as Jemmy were found in a mineshaft near the gravesite, however wether it really was Jemmy is up to debate. The rate of decomposition for the corpse showed the dog had only been buried a few weeks before, in 1920ish. So...
The first Ortino was a French bulldog - a gift to Tatiana from Dmitri Malama, a soldier she nursed in WWI. This Ortino died shortly after, from what is not known, and Dmitri "replaced" the dog with another bulldog. This one survived until 1918, when it is described that a soldier bayonetted the dog because he wouldn't stop barking.
Joy, the only dog known to have come out of the murder room alive, was found by the White Army and taken to England. He had apparently gone deaf or blind, and lived out the rest of his life far from his Russian homeland.
Thank you very much mitia for acknowledging my post in "the fact that his dog survived...". Makes me feel smart : )
I get my reference to the two Ortino's from a letter Alexandra wrote, saying how Ortino had died and Dmitri had replaced the dog. If I ever find that letter again I'll send it to you.
