Would you fork out this money for a reproduction?
« on: June 11, 2008, 07:58:05 AM »
Hey Guys sorry for not being on lately, been busy with Uni and stuff.

I came across eBay and I saw these reproduction prints (which you can easily print on photo paper with your own printer) and I was shocked at the asking/starting price.  Considering that some of these prints have been cropped from original photographs and are in a cabniet card which one can make if your really crafty.

The price is $16.99 and I'm am very sure they have taken these photos from here or Lividia?

Please look at the links and tell me your thoughts?

Now you know why some members put watermarks on their rare photos before posting!

A couple eBay sellers are notorious for harvesting Romanov photos from the AP for resale. There must be a market for it or they wouldn't bother.

On ebay there are so many pics from the ap forum. There is a ebay seller named Tomhet. He use clearly the pics from here. Long time ago I write him a E-mail, that the pics he sells are from our forum and we "proud" to help him make so much money. He writes back that he doesnt "Know" this forum.  :o

Its sad but very unfair, if you spend hours on the web to find pics and than a other makes money with this. Very bad people!  :(

Who in the world would want to pay for a printed out picture when you can do it yourself?? It's ridiculous.

That's why I can't even share my photobucket here because I don't want those sellers on ebay going through it and having a field day.

That would mean that we would hardly ever get new photos without watermarks. I hate watermarks on photos in my collection.
I actually don't mind if someone sells copies of photos I have posted here. I can't imagine why anyone would pay for those prints, but if there are people who are silly enough, it's not our problem.
Besides I think most photos that are posted on the AP were found on other websites and are not scanned (and least of all owned) by members.

Well, I do not have much time to spend here as I would like to do it, cause I m writing on a book about Maria/Marie, but these discussions are so endless, aren t they?

I m shopping at ebay and from time to time I find the items you are mentioning. I think the Cabinet cards are well done, to be true and you must admit it, people do pay much money for them, okay, but I think because they are cheaper than the official ones, the real Cabinet cards or CDVs. What I think is not fair of the seller of the "fake" CDVs etc. is that that the photos are sometimes cut, means there must be OTMA on them and you only have Tatiana and Ana- I think this leads some people to the fact that the photos are new ones or rare, cause they mainly do not know the real look of them.
It s hilarious that some sellers do resell the photos, reproductions they have just bought at those other sellers! ;)

A watermark is no help- it s so easy to erase them even the hidden ones, there is even free software for it on the www.
And please do not mind my words- but where do the photos and pics come from you do put in here? Do you have the original ones? Maybe it s not good even to share those photos here- if you ask someone at the Archives it s illegal, too and many users do copy the photos here, members of the board, put them on the computer and so on...so what goes around comes around- sad, but that s it.
If you upload them here, there is always the fear of someone stealing them- one can use the those files for photos, where you have to log in to share them and are not able to copy them (I can t remember the name).

The mentioned seller tomhet is reliable in many of his items, I just had a look at them and I have bought an antique Cabinet card of him some time ago- so it s just a few photos and I can name some others sellers who have offered photos and (wink) there are members of this forum, right?

So, do not anylonger discuss something you can t change, there is a market for everything as long as there are customers, just laugh about them if they spend their hard earned money on those items- a real collector will not buy them. ;)

Maybe my words are hard and rude, I do not mean it that way.

That is pretty funny... people selling photos of them when they are easily accessed right here.

honestly i don't mind it, some people are so gullible.. and are easily tricked.
their loss.

This is awesome, those radiant Fabergé frames shown in that picture of all their Romanov merchandise posted on each of those item pages are from Winners, I myself have the square one with the photograph of Nicholas II in it ; )

I do get somewhat irked by the colorized photos, but don't understand the uproar over the rest. Chance are 99.9999% of the people who post photos, myself included, don't own the copyright. Just because you scaned it, doesn't mean you own it.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. Please feel free to disagree.

I posted this thread, because I couldn't believe who the buyer is, but I feel sorry for them to spend their money on these pictures you can make yourself.

I have noticed that TOMHET has started watermarking their pics lol.  What a diddy.
