The saluting image has obviously been reversed.  The writing is backwards, and they'd never have photographed him saluting with his left hand.  Great pictures.  At age two he looked just like Shirley Temple!

I must be overlooking the photo you mean. Unless you're thinking of this one? But in that one, neither the German nor the Russian text is backwards, and he's only adjusting his hat, not saluting.
