Anastasia Love Letter
« on: June 20, 2008, 10:24:38 AM »
I was reading "Anastasia Suitor" post and one of the members had mention how a American boy wrote a love letter to the Grand Discuss asking for marriage. Does anyone know any more info on this? I tried searching on line for the letter or more info. Any help will be much appreciated!!  ;D

This was not uncommon -- it was basically fan mail from kooky people. Even in exile, fan letters (some pornographic) were sent to the girls, though that type of mail was intercepted by the commandant and was never read by the grand duchesses. To my knowledge, none of this sort of "fan" correspondence has ever been published. I don't know whether it survives at all.

I saw a "love letter" to Anastasia in real life at an exhibition. So obviously there are at least a couple that have survived. The most famous one being from a young man in America (if I remember right, he was from the midwest) and he went on about how he thought she was the prettiest of her sisters and that he would like to marry her.

That's the one I'm looking for.  :'(

They were famous people. Of course they didn't know nearly as much as we do about them but there were endless postcards distributed of the imperial family and pictures in magazines and newspapers, etc. Yes, it is legit. It's a known fact that people in the US and Russia were able to send mail to the them there. A lot of it being pornographic and crude and it was looked through and thrown away so the majority of it never was never seen by the family. But obviously someone kept that particular letter.

Did OTMAA know fan and love letters were being sent to them, or was it kept secret? Maria would have probably wanted to read them.  ;)

Did the IF visit America, or were any Americans chummy with them?  I know a lady from Washington State was supposed to have been on friendly terms with them.

No, they never visited America.

I doubt the family knew that so many strangers were sending them mail. Most of the letters sent to the Ipatiev House were crude and vulgar; hence why they never got them.
