Poor girl, she had a very sad life...When I was reading Peter the Great, by Massie, I felt a deep pity for Charlotte, since she was the first germanic princess marriying into the russian imperial family and she found nothing but a broken heart and, I suspect, a tortured mind.

In the second and a litle in the third portrait you can see that she looked very much like her sister Elisabeth Christine, mother of Maria Theresia...

During this period and after, it was practically a death sentence for European princesses to be part of a Russian marriage....

Alexei treated Charlotte with the utmost neglect for the sake of a Finnish Mistress named Euphroysne!  Still She must have been terrible mistreated  to welcome her end with joy after the birth of the second child. Would you say She was a meek Person?

Yes, in fact she even reminded me of a young Maria Theresa. Perhaps this has been posted, some portrait on some old thread but are there any portraits of her daughter Natalia, the sister of Peter II and daughter of Tsarvitch Alexei? I can't recall what caused her death at 14- been so long since I've read about it and nothing in front of me- was it smallpox?

Thanks! I have never seen that portrait. They were very close, brother and sister- both died so young, Natalia two years before Peter. I can see a resemblence in Natalia to her cousin Maria Theresa, etc.But also to the Romanovs. Any other photos welcome. Charlotte and her two children certainly had tragic, unfulfilled lives- as one could say Tsarvitch Alexei did as well.

It is a wonderful portrait of the two children.  The future Peter II is a very handsome boy.  It's sad that they had such a difficult early childhood though at least they had each other to turn to for comfort.  I read somewhere that when Peter the Great died and his wife Catherine became Empress she felt sorry for the children and arranged for them to receive kinder treatment.  When someone asked the future Tsar what he wanted most he burst into tears and replied "never to be separated from Natalia".

Hi,

I actually think that she resembles Elizabeth Petrovna (Empress Elizabeth) who would have been her sister-in-law....
Elizabeth was considered a beauty in her day and noted for her beautiful blue eyes.
I wonder how Charlotte and Elizabeth got along?  Or did they associate with one another?
