Nijinsky tribute by Evgeni Plushenko

Since there are so many people who know Nijinsky here, I'm curious as to what you think of Evgeni Plushenko's program Tribute to Nijinsky. Plushenko said that he's fascinated by his story. There seems to be no Off Topic forum here, or I would have posted it there.

For those who have not seen it but wish to, you can watch it on realplayer. There are two different performances, both flawless. One is record-breaking, the other not.

Hey Ang,
    This indeed is priceless stuff.  I'm not sure if you IMed me the pics of the performance or not, but in any case, it's absolutely amazing.  He's one gifted skater.  Thank you ver much for posting it.

nice to see other Plushenko fans here! I've been one of them since he was 15 years old... I love figure skating and Russians have always been my favorite skaters! They have such a balletic way to perform, at least best of them, like Evegeni!

As a figure skater myself, I think that program is quite amazing yet not so good as his 2003 long program that was a tribute to St. Petersburg!

haha I have been a fan since he was 15 too! First time I ever saw him was actually when he was 14-soon-would-be-15, at 1997 Cup of Russia, which is also when I first saw Yagudin. I only saw a 5 second clip of Plushenko, and vowed one day to see him skate. Throughout the year I watched skating, seeing and falling in love with Ilia Kulik, Alexander Abt (AMAZING, LOVE HIM!!!!!!), and finally in 1998 World Championships exhibitions I saw Evgeni, and I still have it on tape to this day. Adorable kid! Since then I was hooked.

I only know a very little bit about Nijinsky, but when I heard he was skating a tribute to him I did research so I could understand the program before I saw it. Seems that us Plushenko fans are the only ones who know what that program is about LOL! Everyone else said it is a travesty, and he's not really balletic (not really balletic, HA! He was offered a place at the Maryinsky when he was TWELVE.) From what I can tell though, he does a great job.

He's not really portraying his life; he's simply thinking of what to dance, in the first half, then in the second half he actually performs it "on stage."

His tribute to Petersburg was his best, I agree. But this is my favorite, I think. I'd love to see him do ballet on stage for real!

Wow, you have exactly the same favs as I do - Ilia Kulik, Sasha Abt, and Evegeni!!  :D Perhaps we should discuss about them in some figure skating forum...  ;D Do you visit FSU forum?

I have always found Nijinsky a fascinating character. I've read one biogaphy of him, can't recall the name though. Does somebody know a good biography book with lots of photographs?

I have also always been a figure skating fan. Do you know if any Russian skaters have ever done a program involving the Romanovs in any way, tribute, story, anything?

Plushenko's tribute to St. Petersburg has a part in which he acts like he is shot and stabbed, who knows it may be referring to the execution, or it may be WWI, or WWII. Lanie and I like to think it's NAOTMAA. You can see his tribute to Petersburg on King On Ice.

www.kingonice.com click video and audio, and I say the best performance of St. Petersburg 300 is the 2003 Grand Prix Final.

The music for both Nijinsky and Petersburg 300 were both specially arranged just for him. To my recollection no other skater has done that. This year, I believe his program will be specially composed, a whole new piece.

His short program this year is a guitar version of Moonlight Sonata.

Also, Tara Lipinski and Ina and Zimmerman have done programs to Anastasia (1997) but niether captured the essence of the story in any way.

There were other skaters who skated to that music but I've never seen them because they're so obscure.

I saw Anastasia On Ice, it was my first ever ice show, it was wonderful, but I was disappointed a little. They circled Marie in a photo and said she was Anastasia LOL.

Since so many of you enjoy the music, I would like to announce I have made a montage of the music to Irina Slutskaya, 2-time World Champion, Russian National Champion, 6-time European Champion, and Olympic Silver Medalist.

You can download the file here, and there are also 2 other montages using other movie music: Alexander Abt features music from Troy, and Evgeni Plushenko features music from the masterpiece The Ten Commandments. The latter is my all-time favorite score to my all-time favorite skater, both of whom I strove desperately to do justice to. Be prepared for a long file for that one, it is almost 13 minutes long. I hope you enjoy these montages.

The Irina montage is 9 and a half minutes, using the bootleg score.
