I agree with everyone's remarks, if there is a place we can donate or send condolences, I'm sure we would all love to know.

I wrote to Irina Zaitseva, the lady with whom I worked at TS museum two summers ago. She emailed me back this morning with a little more information. Apparently the fact that Dr Sautov died abroad, with no witnesses to his death, really complicates the issue of bringing him back to Russia for burial, so at this point they don't even know when they can have a funeral. The Finnish police has to complete their investigation before they can release the body. This makes it even more difficult for his family and friends... The staff at the museum is shocked and distraught about Ivan Petrovich's death, he was very much loved and respected by all of them.

The fact that he would have wished to see it restored to the Quarenghi original rather than reflect the days of the last reign was his personal opinion.

And one which I hope more people come to hold over time.  It really is one of the world's great jewels of neo-classical architecture, and I'm sorry to see it lose perhaps its foremost champion as that -- condicio sine qua non.

In connection with the funeral of Ivan Petrovich Sautov, the late director of the Palace Museums of "Tsarskoe Selo" on August, 6th, 2008, The Catherine and Alexander Palace-Museums and exhibitions will be closed to Visitors.

06.08.2008 Funeral of Ivan Petrovich Sautov to take place on August, 6th.

10.00 - the beginning of civil funeral in The Great Hall of the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoe Selo.

11.30 - departure for St.-Petersburg.

13.00 – Funeral service begins in Saint Isaac’s Cathedral.

14.00 - departure for the cemetery.

15.00 – Burial at the Literatorskii Embankment Cemetery (Help!  Native Russian speaker please!)

16.00 - Departure for memorial service at University embankment., д. 13, The First Cadet Corps’ Manege.

Thank you, Nick. It sounds like they actually have the burial scheduled for August 6th, which means they probably got a date from Finland as to when the body will be released and  shipped back to Russia. That's good news for the family.

Nick, thank you for the links. Burial will be at the Volkovskoe Cemetery which is the referral of Literary Walkway where prominent Russian cultural figures have been buried.

It may be that you were not acquainted with Ivan Petrovich Sautov. You may have questions about him or the Museums of Tsarskoe Selo. I would ask two things of you. One, please reserve this thread for members and guests to post remembrances and condolences. Many of our members have a sense of loss and grief so please treat this thread as an online guest book and as a memorial.

Second, should you have something to say or ask that would not be appropriate for an online memorial, kindly wait a few weeks and post them on a different thread.

I have received many emails in the past few days from members who are offended by the seeming lack of concern of others towards their grief. Please do not become one of them.

I am sorry to hear about Dr. I.P Sautov's death.May he rest in peace.

I would also like to apologize about my previous post in which I asked about who would be Dr.Sautov's successor.That was inappropriate.Again sorry about that.

His death seems unexpected.I know he will be missed by his family and everybody who knew him, my condolences to those you in this forum who knew him.
