I think some photos really looks as retouched because of some scans, agreed?

Yes, but that's a drawing rather than a photograph!

Perhaps we should start a thread of drawings modeled after specific photographs? I know there are quite a few of them, both vintage and contemporary.

Hehe! I actually did that last one you posted, Sarushka. I wanted a copy of just Olga and Tatiana and thought it looked nice enough, so I kept it.

Well done -- you fooled me!

Thanks. I was planning on coloring it but was afraid that it would make my work on the background more visible and thus possibly look as though I was recoloring someone else's picture. Now that I think about it, it doesn't seem like it would get that result.

Here's the group photo that was taken after the death of Marie Alexandrovna. The picture was taken of the family grouped around an empty chair, and she was added:

Her face is shadowed on the left, while everyone else is shadowed on the right. Also, according to Charlotte Zeepvat, the background was painted on -- the original backdrop was a plain curtain.

It appears that the photo of the dead empress was a pose taken from this formal session:

Correction: the empress's picture was indeed added later to complete this family portrait, but not because she'd died. I don't know where I came up with that idea -- the photo was taken in 1870, and MA lived until 1880. Charlotte Zeepvat doesn't say why MA wasn't present at that photo session. Sorry! (And thanks to Jebediha for noticing the discrepancy on another thread.)

Outcut of NII and Alexandra with Aleksei from one formal pose at Standart, ca. 1907

In original they're all together.  ; )

I'm suspicious that the detailing on Olga & Tatiana's dresses was smoothed and highlighted in the 1910 session -- the lace almost looks painted on:

Incidentally, according to Lanie virtually all the formal photos were touched up in the lab before being printed en masse.

I have to add this photo:

It seems unlikely -- Aleksei is cropped out, and photo was inverted on the opposite side only, IMO.

I can tell because Olga's arm is chopped off as if it disappears into Anastasia's body, and she seems a lot brighter than the rest of the girls.

These two must have been touched,

I can see that in the second picture, Olga is turned away from the camera, as well as Tanya. Im not sure if there is a picture where they are exactly the same, I havent seen one.
