New Book: Alexandra + Toni Becker-Bracht
« on: August 15, 2008, 09:02:29 AM »

A little appetizer! There will be a highly interesting new book soon! A must-have for all those with a soft spot for Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (and of course all Romanov-fans)

The letters written by the Empress to her close childhood-friend Antonie (Toni) Becker (1868-1965) from 1887 to 1913. Toni's father, Dr. Ernst Becker, was the private secretary to the British Prince Consort Albert and even served as a tutor for the Prince of Wales (future Edward VII) and Prince Alfred Duke of Edinburgh/S.K.G.
During 10 years serving at the British Court he became a close friend of the Royal Family - a huge collection of letters from Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and all of their children (including gorgeous toddler-letters with their very first steps in the German language) survives to this day as well as precious albums with photgraphs which Becker - like Prince Albert a keen pioneer of the new medium photography and a very gifted photographer himself - took of the Royals and the Royal Household.

When the Prince died and his daughter Princess Alice went to Darmstadt Queen Victoria asked Becker to accompany his former favourite pupil to her new home. Becker agreed and served until his death to the newly made Hessian Princess and future Grand Duchess.
His eldest daughter was baptised "Victoria" - having the Queen as well as Empress Frederick as Godmothers whereas the second, Toni became closely attached to the young Princess Alix of Hesse.
The surviving documents such as letters, postcards, jewels, objets d'arts, Russian toys etc will be shown for the very first time in a book published by Toni's own granddaughter.

Especially the early letters prove to be highly interesting due to their absolutely open voice (character; true but unfortunate love to the Tsarevitch....)
It will be in German (some letters contain English lines though) - but merely the wonderfully rare photographical material is worth taking a glimpse into that book to be.
It even offers a translation of the famous "own cryptic script" Princess Alix and Toni inventioned for themselves.

If anybody should be interested in that book: I can provide information and - as soon as it will be for sale - the address of the seller. Feel free to ask. Greets

Thomas, thanks for this exciting news! Even though I know not a word of German, I may just get this book for the pretty pictures LOL. I had the wonderful German book written about Alix's friendship with Gretchen Fabrice but sold it. It was a great book, though, and I suspect this will be along the same lines. Please post the information for purchasing it once you have it.

Thomas, this is fascinating.  I never dreamed that those letters still existed.  Why did it take so long for them to be published?  This may really help us understand Alix better.  Do you know how many years these letters encompass -- when the last ones were written?

Wow, this sounds very interesting! I probably won't buy it though because I would think it a waste if I couldn't read the bulk of the text.

I wish my school had taught German instead of French now!

Ladies - thank you very much for your replies :)

It will take some time to publish the book - there is still much to do but I'll update the thread as soon as there are any news!

Why were the letters not published earlier? Well, as you can see in my post: Toni lived very long :) She had always refused to talk publically about her close relationship to the Tsarina - though many people knew about it and inquired. Her grand-daughter, now in her sixties herself, is a keen family-researcher and has done much to the huge and important collection of letters and documents which contains - as written before - much more than the letters from Alexandra.
After the publication of "Alix an Gretchen" she thought she could do the same - especially as the early letters to Toni are indeed outstanding. I've never seen Alexandra writing in such an open voice (only exception: to her husband). Much later Ernst Ludwig of Hesse told Toni that she was the only one "really knowing my sister".
The earliest document surviving dates from 1887 the last one is a telegram fr 1913.
In later years Alexandra - of course - had to be careful of what she wrote due to the insecure way of postage.
There will also be quotes from letters by Princess Irene to Toni - and many photos from the 1880ies and 90ies including some of Alexandra's Hessian family.

Thanks Thomas, although now I wish that I could read German.  I would be interested to know if Alix revealed much about her troubles in trying to bear her husband and country a son, as this is something a woman might confide to another woman.  It was, after all, a sort of bizarre fertility problem that only royal couples face.

By the way, how did you know that Naslednik was female? ;)
