Marc, check out the Hesse=Darmstadt Irene of Prussia. Thats why I started this.  To find out more on the family. After reading  it, I  figured it could use its own posting.  F.

Oh,it seems I can again help you,Marc!  ;)
The mansion of the Carlows is on Fontanka Embankment, near to Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace. I mention somewhere in some thread that this building is now a library. Moreover, there is a very good Memorial Library of Prince Golitzin inside of the building.Prince was a great-grandson of GD Ekaterina Mikhailovna and son of Countess of Carlow, one of the daughters of Prince Georg of mecklenburg-Strelitz.
I like this library very much - a lot of info on the Romanovs and their relatives all over Europe.
I have a book "Mansion of Countess Carlow" - a quite informative edition on the Carlows and their mansion. What sort of info do you want exactly ?

I think you know that GD Ekaterina Mikhailovna married Prince Georg of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and they settled in Russia.Three of their children survived -  Georgiy,Elena and Mikhail. The Mecklenburgs were a close-knit family , loved Russia and did not wanted to leave it for Germany. All of the three were very well-educated, had great love for music and used to arrange many concerts of famous musicians and composers. Princess Elena married rather late to Prince Albert of Saxe-Altenburg,protégée of GD Alexandra Iosifovna. Mikhail never married and Georgiy married morganatically.
In 1884 Georgiy meet his great love, Natalia Fedorovna Vanlyarskya, a maid-of-honor of his mother. They would marry only in 1890 after years of struggling with GD Ekaterina and other powerful relatives. In 1890 GD of Mecklenburg-Strelitz gave a permission to Georgiy to wed Natalia. She and her descendants had the title  "Counts of Carlow".
Alexander III did not attend the wedding ceremony of Georgiy and Natalia but Empress Maria Fedorovna sent a diamond bracelet as a present to the bride.

The married life of the couple was very happy, they loved each other, had 3 daughters and 1 son. Countess Natalia was an intelligent, very nice woman much interested in literature, music and arts. She devoted herself to her husband and children. Little by little well-behaved and discreet  Natalia with her soft manner was winning the respect of all high society. She took an active part in charity organizations, esp. in 1904-05 (Russia-Japanese War) and in 1914-17.
In 1909 Prince Georgiy died and weight of cares lied upon Natalia though her brother-in-law Mikhail helped her much.In 1910 Countess and her children were naturalized and became Russian citizens.
Countess of Carlow was admitted to the Imperial Court just after Russian-Japanese War.
As for her relations with other members of the Imperial Family -  all the Vladimirovitchi liked to visit Natalia Fedorovna's family.
In summer 1917 Countess Carlow, her survived children and grandchildren left Petrograd and in 1919 left Russia forever.

That?s short info, mostly on Countess Natalia.

The family of Countess Carlow was of aristocratic origin (gentry).
Her family had been known since 13th or 14th cent.
"Vanlyarskie" or "von Vanlyarskie".

Here is Countess Natalia with her 3 daughters: Ekaterina,Natalia (died young in 1913) and Maria

I have more pics on the Carlows but they are not in a good quality.I'll try to find in better quality.
