Thanx Svetabel. Excuse my ignorance. What international conference 2001? Are you talking of a paper presented at this conference?  Is it in English? Shortly where could I buy or borrow it?
I am getting a bit far from the subject of this thread but I am also very interested in any information on the Russian life of Princess Elenas cousin and husband Prince Albert of Sachsen-Altenburg ( after all Prince Albert was also a relative of the Carlows!!)

I meant a book with the articles on the members of the Russian  Mecklenbourgs-Strelitz's and their  life in Russia. The text is in Russian, and actually I've never seen the book at the bookstores and had picked it up at the Memorial Library of Prince Golitzin in St Petesbourg.

Nice posts Nadya!Very interesting to see something more of this family...One question:Does anyone know if the Carlows had any contacts with the main branch in Neustrelitz?Did Duke Georg and Grand Duchess Ekaterina Mikhailovna ever went to visit Neustrelitz or did the main branch members come to visit them in Russia?

Of course Duke Georg and his spouse GDss Ekaterina M. kept in contact with their relatives in Neustrelitz, after all Duke Georg was a Mecklenbourg Prince and loved his native country. I can' say exactly about their visits though.

The book on the Countess Carlow Mansion was written by G.A. Popov in 1996 - " Попова Г.А. Особняк графини Карловой. СПб., 1996".

What a super thread about this fascinating branch of the family! Wonderful contributions from all!

I wonder...does anyone know whether the Carlows used more than just the Chinese Palace at Oraniebaum, did the family have used of the Grand Palace too? I would also love to know more about Ekaterina M and George M and their relationships with the Hesse clan. Did the Carlows visit Ruppenheim as was a custom I believe, and what of their relations with Dowager Grand Duchess Augusta nee Cambridge and her family. Did the cousins have any contact with Jutta? Oh dear, so many questions sorry!!! I just get a bit carried away.

On the IF thread we have been wondering about the relationship between the Carlows and the rest of the IF and I note that early in this thread someone mentioned that members of the Valdimirovichi were regular visitors to the Carlows, so would love to know more about the dynamics between the various branches of the family and the Carlows and Streliztsky kin. I did suggest that maybe the Family of Mikhail Pavolovich thread be merged with this one, but I think because they are in different categories, this may not be possible which is a great shame as I think this thread and this side of the extended Imperial family is overlooked and tends to be sadly forgotten about!

If speaking about the relationship between the Carlows (and till 1892 GDss Ekaterina M. of course) and the Vladimirovitchi then their friendly relations were mostly based on co-operative charity and welfare-work plus patronage of arts.
Even in Kislovodsk in 1918 (after escaping tumultuous Petrigrad) GDss Maria Pavlovna-elder and Countess Natalia Carlowa together continued to do a charity work. When GDss MP-elder was leaving Kislovodsk (and Russia) forever she was seen with Duke Mikhail of Mecklenbourg-Strelitz, his niece Ekaterina Golitisina (nee Carlowa) and nephew Georgiy, and his sister Elena of Saxe-Altenbourg.

Yes, the used the Grand Palace. The Chinese Palace was "home" for Princess Elena of Saxe-Altenbourg, and her brothers used the Grand Palace.
