Pershino - estate of GD Nikolai Nikolayevitch-younger
« on: August 27, 2008, 04:18:17 AM »
I'd like to share some info on the estate of GD Nikolai Nikolayevitch-younger (1856-1929), who among his  properties owned Pershino, an estate in Tul'skaya Gubernija.

Pershino is situated 32 km to south-east from Tula, on the bank of river Oupa. Originally it was built in the XVIII cent. and changed 2-3 owners during the years, and in 1861 was sold to a merchant Batashev who in his turn sold the estate to GD Nikolai Nikolayevitch-younger in 1887. The estate that time was in a bad state and Grand Duke began its restoration. Later his estate became known as a kennel of hounds and borzois, as GD Nikolay was a keen hunter and doggy man. His kennel in Pershino was very large and famous even abroad in England, Germany and France, the dogs won many prizes at the international dog shows. Certainly after the Revolution of 1917 the estate and kennel decayed and in 1919 most of the dogs were went away to Czechia.

Here’s the Grand Duke Palace in Pershino:

You can see a sort of dog-show in front of the Palace.

And the long shot of the estate

The interiors of the Palace were lost after 1917 but thanks to contemporaries of Grand Duke and  wonderful book “Pershinskaya ohota” (“Pershino’s Riding to hounds”) by D.Valtsov we can learn something about them and see some pictures. All the walls in the palace were covered with the pictures, photos, engravings, prints of the dogs and a lot of hunter’s stuff (antlers, horns, stuffed animals and so on), such as here:

This is Dining Room in the Palace

And this is a staircase in the entrance hall

I think GD Anastasia prefered to live and entertain herself and her guests in Chair (the Crimea) and Bezzabotnoe (not far from St-Petersbourg) though she certainly visited Pershino.

Do you have any fuirther information on Bezzabotnoe?  I hadn't heard of that estate, and would love to see pictures, etc. if you have anything about it.  I'm always amazed at your wonderful sources of information and your willingness to share them.

Not much info on Bezzabotnoye, alas. I haven't seen/found any pictures of the Palace/ mansion in the estate, so I can only share info I was able to find out.
Originally Bezzabotnoye was a village Novie Gorbounki, not far from Strelna (to the south from it).Now it’s Gorbounki. In 1825 Olga Zherebtsova, sister of famous Platon Zoubov (last lover of Empress Catherine II) bought Novie Gorbounki and named her new estate Bezzabotnoye (aka San Souci as in Potsdam, Germany). The area of the estate was not large, just 29 Ha, but a beauty spot situated on the river Strelka.  In 1869 the estate was sold to a merchant, and after some years it again changed an owner. The lawful heirs of that last owner presented the estate to GD Nikolai Nikolayevitch before 1910 year. In 1914 in Bezzabotnoye GD and his spouse acted as the hosts to famous French general Joffre.
The original buldings in the park of Bezzabotnoye are lost now, only the park itself is preserved.

When you think about it and all the members of the Imperial Family and Nobility of Imperial Russia there must be a lot of country estates that we do not know about or have seen. Perhaps we can investigate this and see what we all come up with? There were many fine states I'm sure.

And most of them are completely lost now. Not an easy task for investigator to find any info on all that lost splendour.

Mind you did any of them have property in England? If owned before 1917 it would not be subject to confiscation as happened in Russia.

It's interesting that Grand Duke and his spouse entertained General Joffre in the mortgaged estate : ). In 1913 the Grand Ducal pair bonded the Bezzabotnoye but continuied to live in it. GDss Anastasia N. had dealt a lot for the estate as well as she dealt with Chair in the Crimea.
