If you want to share the Romanov story with the young people in your life, do not miss this:

by Candace Fleming
ISBN 978-0-375-86782-8

The research is impeccable and the narrative compelling. It also uses primary sources to give an excellent perspective of life in tsarist Russia beyond the palace gates.

I wish The Family Romanov had been around when I was 12 — it's Massie-caliber non-fiction for kids. Don't just take my word for it — so far it's received five starred reviews.

Interesting. From the list of her previous novels I see this isn't her first foray into historical non-fiction (Ben Franklin, the Lincoln's, Eleanor Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, etc). Are they all designed for children?

It probably won't make it onto my personal bookshelf, but I think it's great, as your mentioned, that someone is writing these types of introductory stories for the roughly 12-18 year old crowd. So much out there is either childish fantasy-fiction (Anastasia), dry historical (Fate of the Romanovs), or for the longtime Romanov devotee (insert title here _____ ). There's someone in particular I know (advanced 14-year old daughter of a friend studying the Russian language) that I'll recommend it to!

It's good to hear that The Family Romanov is well-written, I found the idea of a book aimed at a younger audience interesting.
