Aleksei had a dog named "Shot"?

This is driving me bats -- I've been chasing this question for months and keep going around in circles. Lili Dehn, Valentina Chebotareva, Sisters of Mercy, and Complete Wartime Correspondence all spell the name with a "p". Since it seemed likely they had worked from original documents, I was inclined to trust Fuhrmann and SoM.

The way Joe Fuhrmann worked on the correspondence was that he typed in both the 1923 and 1929 published versions of the letters, then translated the Russian translation (I forget the editor of this but can check; it's an old Soviet version) and worked that into the gaps, and then he went to GARF and checked what he'd copied and translated against the originals to see if what he had written down was actually correct as a representation of what was there, and made any necessary changes....so I suspect that he wasn't specifically looking for the dog's name and probably shouldn't be considered an authority on that - I guess he just copied it as was from the 1923 letters.

The Empress mentions Shot as well - sleeping on her bed, I think.....

Oh wow, this is a very new one for me. I'll see if I can get some research in - I'd love to find out what became of the two Shots.

Until I saw this thread I had not heard of Shot(s). Interesting and nice to know that the Palace was full of dogs and a few puddy cats.

I don't recall where I read it but I do recall that one of the dogs died of a brain hemorrhage because we had a dog that died of the same thing.  Another pup was immediately brought in to the palace as a replacement and was given the same name.

I don't recall the name "Shot" for any of the dogs.

Translation can be very tricky, can't it?

Bear -- I believe that was Shvybzik who died of cerebral inflammation in 1915.

Incidentally, Anastasia also mentions a French bulldog named Bille in one of her letters. Have you ever run across any info on that dog in your imperial pets research?

I haven't.   I do believe there was more than one French bulldog.

I don't recall there being two "Shvybzik".  Could this be a Russian word  which sounds like "Shot" when spoken or written in English?  (A stretch, I know, but I thought I'd ask.)

Not a chance. The only thing the two names have in common is the first letter, no matter which language you're speaking.

We in Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo) say that graves were destroyed in the war, but many were later restored. I have a photo of how they appear today.

As I recall, there were two Ortinos.  The first one was a gift from Dmitri Malama in 1914. He died about a year later in Sept. 1915, and when Malama heard about it, he sent another similar dog to Tatiana in early 1916, which Tatiana also named Ortino.
