Russian film- Admiral (Адмирал)
« on: October 11, 2008, 12:32:51 PM »
I found accidentally that in our cinemas in Tallinn is running a russian film about admiral Koltshak who was loyal to tsar and who fought against communists. I saw it today and  I must say it was a powerful movie. The film showed how bloody was Russian revolution and civil war. There were terrible scenes were white officers were taken to the forest and they were all shot. Very, very sad.
Also it showed Koltshak`s personal life (his family and his love towards Anna) and how he did everything to restore monarchy and win the civil war. But as we all know, it didn`t happen, he was murdered.
They showed Nicky in this film too, very shortly but it was very nice to see him there.

It was very interesting to pay close attention to the reactions of the people who were watching this film. In the front row there were two russian guys who were laughing at every sad scene. I got angry but I didn`t say anything. After the film I noticed that very many russian people were crying. It showed how they are splitted. I was quite sad to see this.
Me and my friend were only estonians, all the other people were russians. :) Oh how I love their language.

If it is possible, watch this film!

It sounds good, I hope they'll release it worldwide, or that there'll be another way to see it in time. I love these kind of movies, tragic, dramatic, love and all that, and even more when it's about history, I really would like to see it, and how was Nicky in this movie? And what was the scene about?

Nicky was presented in a good way. He was sitting in the park when he met Koltšak. Koltšak had won a battle over germans at sea and the emperor upgraded him to admiral. Nicky gave him an icon and made a cross in air for Koltšak. He didn`t look exactly like Nikolai but it didn`t matter much. I recognized him instantly.

Here are two trailers of the movie:

The BBC in the USA had a major segment on this movie last night. It was favorable as was Russian popular reaction to it. That the BBC would even mention a mere movir release is significant.

The trailers look lovely, and it's a movie of 20 Century Fox, then there is a chance for a worldwide release, i surely do hope so, it seems to be quite a production, and if I am right i spotted Nicky in the first trailer.

Seems to be a great movie,

Well I was looking around the internet and found a new russian movie called-  Gentlemen Officers: Save the Emperor (Господа офицеры: Спасти императора) There are some clips in Youtube too about this film. Sounds interesting. If I got it right it was released this year. But I may be wrong.

I viewed the entire movie last night and have a number of comments about the movie:

The cinematography is excellent, that is in the style of a great Merchant-Ivory film.

The costuming is wonderful and as far as I could see the uniforms, weapons, orders and medals, icons etc. one hundred percent correct.  It is not often that I see a period movie that does not have errors of some sort.

The sets are wonderful often filmed in the actual locations and correct to the smallest details such as the (unattractive but very pre-1917) wall paper in Anna Vasilienva's Helsinki apartment.

The acting is good but the main characters seem to lack the awareness of their impending doom and the seriousness of their situation. Maybe this was how it really was at the time since we have the benefit of knowing how it all ended. I do feel that the movie was rushed, that is, that it was covering so much history in such a short time. It could have been much longer and it probably was severely edited for commercial reasons. I would love to see a Director's Cut of this film that was say four hours long.

: ;DI would say that this was a very good film. It was very powerful and beautifully made. The attention to detail was great and I could not fault the acting.
I highly recommend this film to anyone who is interested in this sad period of Russian history

I looked around on Russian sites and I found out that next year there is going to be a series about Kolchak`s life with the same actors. Konstantin Khabensky is a very good actor. It is so sad that his wife died :(

I purchased a copy of this dvd from russiandvd.com. It has an option for turning on english subtitles. The description in red at the top of the listing says it is a PAL dvd, but in the description it says "all" for regions. I was able to play it on my region1 (US) dvd player without any problems. If you have any concerns, I would contact the company before ordering.

I enjoyed the film. The special effects of the war scenes were very good and the costumes well done.

The link opens in russian, but there is "switch to english" option at the top of the webpage.

Thanks for the link, however the movie seems to be out of stock. :( From what I have seen on youtube and the trailer it seems to be a very good movie.
I will try to find another source and let you know.
