Gonzalo de Borbón y Dampierre
« on: October 11, 2008, 01:34:46 PM »
Hi everybody
I read some articles about Gonzalo de Bourbon and I wonder what he looked like? What were his interests ? Are there pictures of him, alone, with wives Carmen, Mercedes or Manuela, or with family ?
Did the prince shared the views of his elder brother Duque d'Anjou & Cadiz ? What was his role for the french legitimists ?
what about his relations with daughter Stephanie ? Did the prince spent time with her & grandsons ?
I know there are lot of questions in one ... :) so sorry

Gonzalo was considered a French prince to Legitimists so this thread is relevant.

HOLA has some pictures and information about Gonzalo: http://www.hola.com/hola/2000/ho2913r.htm
And there is a wikipedia (I know, I know) article on him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gonzalo_de_Borb%C3%B3n_y_Dampierre

I remember quite well don Gonzalo. Alfonso, duke de Cadiz, was the serious man...and, at the same time, Gonzalo, his younger brother, appeared as the "bon vivant". His first wife, Carmen Harto, has not good things to say about him. The marriage was a failure from the first day. The second marriage with Mercedes Licer wasn´t more succesful. After the divorce, Gonzalo gave an exclusive interview to Hola to acknowledge his daughter Estefanía, who was born of his youthful´s relationship with an american named Sandra. But Sandra also stated Gonzalo never took care of Estefanía. He did gain a lot of money with the exclusive, but he later was again cold and distant towards his daughter Estefanía.

Sounds complicated. If he was Spanish, how do he became French again ?

Thanks everybody

I've read all you gave me. So Gonzalo was an economist.  It seems that the prince wasn't lucky...Parents away, just had an elder brother who took care of him, but who died tragically a few years after his nephew. A leukemia then...Happily he has finally found Emanuela.
Does Emanuela use the title Duquesa de Aquitania ? Where does she live now?
Was Gonzalo patron of some charities in Spain or France? Did he enter spanish air force like Duque d'Anjou y Cadiz for military service?

the first link given by Benjamin stated that he was the  Cousin of King Juan Carlos and... Duke of Aquitaine (title associated with monarchists royalist French)

yes, here it is Eric:
Since Gonzalo's mother was not born a princess of a royal house, his grandfather Alfonso XIII did not consider Gonzalo in line to the Spanish throne in accordance with the Pragmatic Sanction of 1776. Gonzalo's father Jaime disagreed, however, and maintained that his sons were Spanish dynasts with the style His Royal Highness. In Spain Gonzalo was generally addressed as Don Gonzalo de Borbón y Dampierre. Elsewhere he was often addressed as a prince with the style His Royal Highness.

The internal family conflict over Gonzalo's rank and title continued throughout his life. In 1972 his uncle the Count of Barcelona invited him to the wedding of his daughter Margarita; the invitation did not recognise the royal rank of Gonzalo who wrote a letter of protest to his uncle.[11]

Gonzalo was considered a French prince with the style His Royal Highness by those legitimists who believed that his grandfather Alfonso XIII was also the heir to the French throne. After his grandfather's death and the accession of his father Jaime in 1941, Gonzalo was regarded as second in line to the legitimist French throne for many years until the birth of his nephew in 1972.

On 8 March 1972, Jaime named him and received him into the Order of the Holy Spirit and the Order of Saint Michael; the declarative letters patent were dated 21 September 1972.[12] Also on 21 September 1972 Jaime gave Gonzalo the title duc d'Aquitaine (Duke of Aquitaine).[13] He was given the Grand Cross of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus by Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy; the document of investiture referred to him as Duke of Aquitaine.

On 14 September 1988, the tribunal d'instance in Montpellier issued a certificate of French nationality to Gonzalo on the grounds that his mother was born French and had retained her nationality when she married. On 18 May 1989, Gonzalo was issued French national identity papers with the name SAR de Bourbon, duc d’Aquitaine, Gonzalve Victor (H.R.H. of Bourbon, Duke of Aquitaine, Gonzalve Victor). He later received a French passport with the same name.

Gonzalo is buried in Madrid in the Church of Las Descalzas, near the Monastery. I  saw his tomb on which is only engraved :"Don Gonzalo de Borbon y Dampierre 1937-2000. Don Gonzalo travelled all over the world with his spanish passport.

Thus the confusion. In Spain he was regarded mostly as Don Gonzalo de Bornon y Dampierre. I even read books in Spanish that uses this title. But it seems he sort of transferred. His nephew is now also a French Prince even though his father was the Duke of Cardiz ! It created a complication with their cousins the Borbon-Orleans of France...

I believe Emanuela's mother 2 Dss San Lorenzo, Pss Vittoria Ruspoli was very ambitious and pushed the wedding through in haste . King Alfonso was furious and did not recognise the union. Due to his handicap the King had forced him to rennounce the Spanish throne in 1933. The couple soon parted after the birth of Gonzalo and divorced in 1947. Duke of Segovia eventually married Charlotte Tiedmann  described as "alcoholic nightclub singer" and declared himself heir to the French throne in 1950 as Jacques Henri VI.
Gonzalo took after his father and enjoyed a playboy life . He was first engaged to Hotel heiress Dorothy Fritz in 1959. In 1968 his mother prevented his marriage to bull fighter and painter Sandra Landry ( former wife of Alfred Werden , astronaut on the ApolloXV ). She is the mother of  his daughter Estephania who lives in Palm Beach USA with her family.

Thanks everybody
So Gonzaolo had double citizenship
Are there pictures showing Stephanie Michelle de Bourbon with her husband and sons ? or with her father? that will be nice
I know that Kings Henri IV & Louis XIV gave titles to their illegitimate children like duke of Berry's daughters were given titles too so maybe sometimes, the duke of Anjou will give a title to her cousin, or maybe to their sons. that would be interesting. Probably counts, viscounts & barons. Let's imagine

There are a good amount of pictures...published a few years ago in the spanish magazine "Hola". But I haven´t these old magazines...sorry.
About the second question...as far as I know, Luis Alfonso and his first cousin Stephanie Michelle never had a meeting. Perhaps I´m confused, but I think Stephanie Michelle stated her father´s family never had been interested about her...
