The Seefried auf Buttenheims
« on: October 15, 2008, 07:57:53 AM »
I would like to talk about the Family of Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria, daughter of Leopold of Bavaria and Gisela of Austria.
She ran away and married Otto Count Seefried auf Buttenheim, which was a big scandal because he was a minor rank royal.
I don't know much about her husband and children, so let me know what you know.  ;)

Well. Elizabeth married her husband (who was inferior in rank to her) against her parents wishes and was exiled from Bavaria. However Franz Josef was more sympathetic to his granddaughter's plight and openly recieved her into court. After that doors began to open to the disgraced couple.

Otto Seefried was born in Bamberg in 1870.
He and Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria got married in December 1893. They had four children: Elisabeth, Augusta, Valerie and Franz Joseph.
All daughters were born in Znojmo (Czech republic). Their only son Franz Joseph was born in 1904 in Ružomberok (Slovakia).
Otto Seefried was passionate hunter and he discovered in woods near Liptov very good hunting possibilities. They used to regulary spent there summer untill 1918.
Elisabet's grandfather Emperor Franz Joseph visited them occasionally in their villa in Hietzing near Schonbrunn palace. He was resigned with marriage of his granddaughter and with her husband had quite good relationship. Perhaps their common passion for hunting bonded them.
Both Otto and Elisabeth died in castle Stiebar- Otto in 1951 and Elisabeth in 1957.

I don't know closer details. Her parents were very upset by her decision and her paternal grandfather Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria was particularly angry with her. Presumably later they was resigned for that situation too. But Otto Seefried had never been treated in court in Vienna or Munich like somebody in same rank.
For example: he couldn't stay by his wife side of Empress Elisabeth's funeral. He could take part the funeral, but he was with another army officers (he was major in that time, I think).

Yes indeed, I am not sure as well, whether they were received in Munich at all.

Are there Pictures of Elisabeths and Ottos children?

I've only seen one of Auguste with her sons.

I have a postcard of Elisabeth, Augusta, Marie Valérie and their little brother Franz Joseph. Unfortunately I don't have access to my pictures at the moment. But I keep it in mind. :-)
Ich aber breite trauernd aus

Und kehr' ins Feenreich nach Haus -
Nichts soll mich wieder bringen.

I think I use this photo in my last book "Royal Images". It was a Bavarian group (that included Paz, Louise of Alencon, Adalbert...) with King Alfonso XIII.

Thanks for photos of Augusta!
I have photo of Otto Seefried with killled bear by side in one book. But quality of picture is not clear. Therefore is perhaps no point to copy it.
