Hi,

Certainly Alexander Nevsky was a great leader but I would nominate Ivan III 'the Great'....
He cast off the Kahns and expanded Moscow territory double most.  He also reinforced the Kremlin in stone and built the Facet & Terem Palaces in the Byzantine style.
He was influenced by his wife, Sophia, to bring in Byzantine protocol, which survived to 1917.

Yaroslav the Wisest, I think. Because when he was a ruler, people were clever (could write), and Russia had contacts with Europe.

didn't yaroslav marry the daughter of harold 2nd (of england)?

i believe many royal european houses descend from this marriage - because later on anna of kiev married the king of france.

This intrigued me, as it was only recently I realized the current Queen is descended from Harold II.  You weren't too far off in part Ilyala, it was Yaroslav's grandson, Vladmir II who md. Harold's daughter.  Here's the line of descent back into the English royal family-
Harold Godwinson>
Gytha of Wessex>
Mstislav I of Kiev>
Euphrosyne of Kiev>
Béla III of Hungary>
Andrew II of Hungary>
Violant of Hungary>
Isabella of Aragon>
Philip IV of France>
Isabella, Queen of England>
Edward III

 :-[

yeah, well my history of the early eastern europe is almost totally in the dark. i had a vague idea about this but i didn't know which king, and all. i suppose yaroslav being the most famous was the easiest to pick :P

oh, and to become on topic again, my favorite Rurik was ivan iii.

it's interesting to speculate what would have happened had his grandson dmitri (son of ivan, ivan iii's son by his first wife) would have inherited the throne, rather than vasili (son of ivan by his second wife). as we all know vasili's line ended soon which led to the romanovs. maybe dmitri's line would have been luckier had it been allowed to develop. (poor dmitri died young in prison)

There was a competition, called "name of russia"
Firstly were 500 persons chosen, then 50, then 12 left.
And Alexander Nevsky was named the "Name of Russia" - the best person in Russian history.
