Godchildren of OTMA
« on: October 25, 2008, 06:46:12 PM »
I put this in Olga's thread because she is the oldest.

I was wondering if any of the sisters were ever godparents and to whom.

I'm pretty sure Olga was Alexei's godmother.

I have heard same thing, also. I think there is thread in Imperial Family section about OTMAA godparents.  :)

It looks as though one of Alexei's godmothers (Lord, I didn't know they had so *many*!) was Olga Alexandrovna, his aunt, not Olga Nicholaievna, his sister.

Olga N. was one of Alexei's godmothers, according to The Life and Tragedy of Alexandra Feodorovna by Sophie Buxhoevden.  An excerpt from the book reads:

"His four small sisters, in short Court dresses, gazed open-eyed at the ceremony, Olga Nicholaevna, then nine years old, being in the important position of one of the godmothers."

Alexei had other godparents as well, but evidently Olga was one of them.  I have never heard of Tatiana, Maria or Anastasia having any godchildren, though.  But I think that it is definitely possible.  Anyone else have more information?

Tatiana was a godmother to Anna Vyrubova´s niece, who was also named after her.
Maria and Anastasia were both present at the christening of Titi, son of Lili Dehn, but weren´t the gormothers though...

Thak you very much!

I wonder what about Prince Vasilii (about his godmother, can it be posible they were one of OTMA sisters), son of Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna?

Wasn't AF one of Titi's godparents? I think she was.

Yes, you´re right. Titi was originall christened according to protestant (?) fashion, but Alexandra demaded him to be christened in Orthodox fashion, and she became his godmother.

I noticed that Minnie was god-mother to all of Nicky's children.
Is that a russian tradition that a grand-mother will also be a god-mother ?
Or does it just apply to the Tsar's children

Was she also the god-mother of her other grand-children born from her other children Michael (doubt it), Olga and Xenia ?

I think it was common, that if something was to happen to the parents, the children were intrusted to the godparents. so maybe Maria Fyodorovna was a god.mother to all nicky´s children because of posibility of any mishap to Imperial couple.

In the recently published 1913 diary of Grand Duchess Olga Nicholaevna there is an entry on page 96 for the date July 24:

"Anastasia and I rode bikes to Derevenko's  house, where we played with his son and my Godson Yevegeny (Varvara's son). They are so sweet."

Does anyone know who Varvara may be?
