Georg and Isabella
« on: November 07, 2008, 10:54:59 AM »
Perhaps the issue has been discussed in another threads, but I´m interesting in knowing more about the short marriage between prince Georg of Bavaria and archduchess Isabella of Austria. They were married at the beginning of 1912, but at the end of the same year they were involved in an annulment procedure. I find it rather strange...

Anyone knows what happened??
(Pictures of the two are welcome).

The marriage broke up right after the wedding

http://royalmusingsblogspotcom.blogspot.com/  You will find that I have written several articles about the couple ...

the prince, who later became a priest, was most likely gay ... but there is also the possibility that Isabella was a lesbian - as she did have a female companion in her later years.

Interesting!

Isabella became a nurse in the Austrian army during World War I. During the war, she fell in love with the surgeon Paul Albrecht (1873-1928) and was briefly engaged to him until Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria forbade the marriage. She never married again, and died in La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland on December 6, 1973.

Thank you so much, Marlene and Mari!

Marlene, let me say one more time how much I enjoy reading your Royal Musings! But it contains so many entries about royals that I surely didn´t see the entries you´ve written about Georg and Isabella. I´d make another research ;) It´s always a pleasure to read your little but charming pieces!!

Mari, it´s very interesting your link. Thanks for sharing!

Prince Georg and Archduchess Isabella
Ich aber breite trauernd aus
die weiten weissen Schwingen,
Und kehr' ins Feenreich nach Haus -
Nichts soll mich wieder bringen.

Today I found this picture on ebay: "Prince Georg of Bavaria & Archdss Isabella 1912 wedding"

First I was really excited, but then ... In my opinion, we can see someone's wedding on this picture, but not Isabella's and Georg's wedding. Bride and groom don't look familiar to me and I can't recognize one single person.

What do you think?

I also saw the picture on ebay. Actually that wedding is not of Isabella and Georg as No ANY familiar face.
My guess the whole party is a wedding of some noble family.

There were press reports about this possible relationship.  By that time, I sincerely doubt she cared what the emperor thought. You also have to take Catherine Radziiwill with a grain of salt

thanks for the nice remarks about Royal musings

I have been reading more about the break up of the Marriage and it is certainly interesting reading about Georg and Isabella!
The New York Times reported besides far reaching differences in the character and disposition of the two, that the Archduchess was subjected to slights by the Bavarian Royal Family.
http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9F05E0D7123BE633A2575BC1A9679C946296D6CF

However "the Austrian Court from Within" claims she appeared disheveled on the doorstep of the Archduke Frederick and insisted on being admitted and even to her Father and Mother would say nothing except She would not return to a Husband which She declared no human persuasion could make her return to and
Isabella threatened to go into a Convent. At any rate at the end of the three months she went to her Aunt the Archduchess Maria Theresa and told her the details of her conjugal life who went to the the Emperor Franz Joseph who agreed his Grandson had acted inexcusably!

Josepha was really beautiful comparing to the plump Isabella . It seems Josepha started her relationship to Prince Georg, much before he married to Isabella. I wonder what Georg did so
inexcusably to Isabella.
