Was Anastasia or Maria buried with Alexei? Do they even know? I have been off the site for a while.

It was Maria.

To be honest, there is still no exact determination who was who.  They only know that the bones of the recent female found with Alexei are not the same as the Anastasia/Marie female found in '94.  All are know accounted for, but we may never actually know which girl was which.

The Russians have always said it was Maria.

Bob Atchison saw all the skulls in Yekaterinburg in the mid 90's and says Anastasia's was there. He was speaking as an artist, this is not scientific, but I have confidence in his knowledge of facial structures, which is confirmed by I believe the Abramov studies of taking skull photos and showing what the person would have looked like and matching that to possible identifications.

Dr. Maples said the missing daughter was Anastasia.

I saw photos of skulls, and I always said that Maria is missing; because I read account of murder, and looked at skull-photos very long, and I simply knew Maria was missing. And I compared  OTMA's facial structures with their formal 1917 pictures.

This is what I think. People who believe Anastasia is the missing one are usually convinced vecause of the height estimation, which I don´t think could be entirely correct (they found only very much destroyed parts of the skeletons or no?). Besides, Anastasia certainly did grown up at least a bit during captivity. The logic says it was Maria - they wanted to burn Alexandra right? Alexandra was quite high. What did they misidentified the body for Anna Demidova? Because Anna was also tall.... All the victims had more or less unrecognizable faces, they bodies were set with so many wounds....Well, at least that´s what I think. I also have trust in Russian scientists and, Bob Atchison and Mr. Abramov.

I think Anastasia was buried with Alexei. The Americans' justification of Anastasia being missing from the 1991 grave as opposed to Maria was a lot more convincing, given that they made their assumptions were based on more factors as opposed to the Russians' computer programme. Bearing in mind the Russians who believe Maria was missing also said that the skeleton of Demidova was that of the Emperor - a very elementary mistake when it comes to forensics, I feel more inclined to go with the American assertion.

I also feel that identifying Anastasia in 1991, like King and Wilson suggested, may have spawned from the Russians' desire to prove to the west Anastasia was dead.

While I suppose it doesn't really matter--we now know that the entire family perished 97 years ago tonight--I have to say that I agree 1000% with Romafan96, for the identical reasons. I suppose we'll never know with absolute certainty, but it really doesn't matter. BOTH Maria and Anastasia died that night--along with Alexei, Olga, Tatiana, their parents, and several servants. It was a horrible death which NONE of them deserved.

I know it ultimately doesn't matter because all bodies are accounted for now, but the fact that we'll probably never know who was buried with Aleksey for sure drives me a little crazy!

Still we know they all died that horrible day.  No one survived.

At least we all know they all died. However, it does big me slightly that at least two of the girls  have most likely been buried under the wrong name. This may not sound like a big deal but I have two sisters who are close in age to me and I would be mortified if our identities were mistaken upon burial.
