The Box
« on: October 15, 2004, 11:42:15 AM »
Was stuck yesterday in a small canadian town, where I had to go the local public library and was surprised to see many Romanov books about the Romanovs (not the rare books).
One photo that I had never seen before was the one in Gibbes' book that showed the box that had the remains of the family found by Sokolov.  A family, a legacy, history and an empire all in a box...

Dear Neva,

I should like to know about this book, too, and in which small town you saw it. Since I am stuck in a not-so-small Canadian town, I am hoping it will turn out to be in a place where I can go to see it.

Thanks,

Katherine Alexandra M. Hines

I expect the book is "The House of Special Purpose" AKA "Tutor to the Tsarevich".

What small Canadian town were you in? There are lots of towns and Canada is a really big country!!

It was in a very small library that I found a copy of The Hessian Tapestry, and other not so common books on the Romanovs years ago. Love those little places.

I also think it would be House of Special Purpose. I found that book years ago in a used book store.

I also think it is, "The House Of Special Purpose".  My copy was found at our favorite auction site.

The town was Kitchener, Ontario.

By the way, the picture showed the box (a valise) closed, not open.

Apparently that box originally belonged to Alexandra. I may be mistaken, but I believe it was one of her hat boxes.

The photograph @ p 137 (The House of Special Purpose) shows a closed box which was sealed by rope.

Belochka,

Your description of the picture seems to be the one I saw.

I thought hat boxes would be round. This one is rectangle. Perhaps hats can be rectangle...lol

Are you talking about the picture of the box of remains that is in William Clarke's book The Lost Fortune of the Tsars?

I believe the box was in lilac colored leather with AF and was an offical dispatch box.

Hi Arleen,

Yes it's the same photograph in both books. The one in Trewin's book has been cropped.  ;)
