Bryndis) these really are quite remarkable. I swear if you stare long enough at the 'now' portion of these 'then & now' photos you can just about see their ghosts wandering about it. Thanks so much for sharing and please don't hesitate to post more!

Jen) Nice find there with the castle! Is it just me though or does the opening in the 1896 photo look wider than the door that seals it off in your current picture?

It's not just you! I've just had a look at it now and it does a little, unless something to do with photo angle?

I live a few hours north of Balmoral and it's beautiful in that area!

That is absolutely dreamy!  When I first started reading about the Romanovs, before I saw many photos, this was almost exactly how I envisioned where Alix came from.
Well, the Chinese were only using a simple polyphoneticly grouped twenty square digit key, transposed from booster verdonic form, with multiple nulls.

Finland, Langinkoski, cottage of Alexander III (Russian izba)

Then, summer 1889

And now, 3 days ago

The same izba. Empress Maria Fedorovna peeling potatoes with her son Georgiy and a member of the suite

Now

(That is a door to the kitchen)

You are welcome. It's amazing how they preserve that izba, and even found the authentic furniture for the interiror - the original beds of the Emperor and Empress and many other items.

"Haunting" is the only word I can think of to describe those pictures. They give me chills.
