I've read in another thread that Yurovsky seemed to enjoy slandering Maria Nikolaevna.

I disagree with that idea. Yurovsky's reports are all quite businesslike and detached. His comments about Maria don't stand out from his remarks about the others. I also don't pick up any sense of enjoyment on his part regarding any of his duties with the imperial family. IMO, we're projecting that onto him because we find his observations unpalatable.

A lot also depends on translation. The APTM version of the same section of Yurovsky's 1922 note reads as follows:
"The precious stones were found to be with Tatiana, Olga and Anastasia. Here the special position Maria held in the family was confirmed, on [Maria] there were no precious stones."

"Special" is quite different from "disgraced." When I get a chance I'll look up the original Russian and see which is most accurate.

As Sarushka said, Yurovsky's account doesn't seem to convey any particular emotion. I think that he was telling the truth or what he perceived to be the truth, at least.

I don't understand what he meant about Maria being considered like a step-daughter in the family. I know that was one of her childhood nicknames from her elder sisters, so it's possible that he heard them referring to Maria as such and did not understand the meaning behind it. Was he perhaps referring to the fact that it was often Maria who carried Alexei outside and that she was relied upon by the family in other ways, simply because she was physically strong, generally cheerful, and reliable?

I just can't accept that Maria's lack of jewels on the night of her death indicates a stain on her character. I just can't imagine, based on what we know of her, that she would do anything that would hurt her family.

Sounds more like Ermakov.  That guy would have raped them all if he'd been given the opportunity.

and I can't believe the Marie jewels thing has come up yet again...LORD.
It seems pretty  obvious  Marie did not have jewels on her person that night ,
because the jewels  hidden in the corsets were still  in Tobolsk   when she left with her parents .

When they left Tobolsk, they had an idea they were possibly  off to Moscow .
They would hardly take jewels in that case... as it was they were thoroughly  searched upon arrival at Yekaterinburg.

In consequence  Alix wrote to  those left behind  in code they should " arrange the  medicines "
that is,  hide the jewels as arranged, Those left behind in Tobolsk then started  hiding the
jewels in their  corsets,  the "armor"  etc..

Marie did not have jewels on her person because she was not in Tobolsk
when these corsets were constructed ( what else can one called it? )

Would anyone expect them to rip up a corset once all the family are together
so they can rehide jewels on Marie? Of course not.

I think, likely that Maria did have some jewels on her person the night of the murder.
She simply did not have the same "armor" as her sisters because she was not there when the items were being concealed.

Exactly

Wasn't Yurovsky there after the family was reunited?  He would not be keenly aware Marie was separated
from her sisters or even where and when the corsets were made.

He can tell us that Marie did not have a corset. He cannot tell us why .
His speculations about  the why  are not worth much  imo
