Would Alexei have grown a beard?
« on: January 04, 2009, 10:48:43 PM »
I didn't see a specific topic about this on here, so.

If Alexei had lived and grown to adulthood and especially if he had become Tsar, would he have grown a beard?

I ask first because there seems to be a tradition of that among most of The Tsars, also, having hemophilia especially back in that day, and trying to shave.

My own guess is he would never have tried shaving and that he would have worn a beard.

Because they can generally be managed with direct pressure, surface cuts are not terribly dangerous for most hemophiliacs, so shaving may not have been a problem for Aleksei.

I think Alexei most likely would have grown a beard.  It is a tradition in Orthodoxy--most men do grow beards.  Some Orthodox men grow very long and full beards, especially monks and priests.  Most of them also have long hair.

It was also the fashion of the day.  He may have gotten rid of it and worn "trendy" facial hair, or none at all, depending what fashion would have dictated.

Has anyone ever done one of those age-enhancement programs on him, to see what he would have looked like at 20, 30, 40,50 years of age?

There's a thread about it here:

Age-progressed pictures?

Thanks!
THere were a couple of him on that thread but none with beards.  He sure would have grown to resemble his mother, though, in my opinion.

Didn't men start to shave off their beards in the 20's? It kind of grew out of fashion. But perhaps he would have grown a beard, considering that that he belonged to the Orthodox church.

I think so. I am not really into 20s fashion, so I don't know. But who knows?

My sense is Alexei would have grown a beard. Not because of his hemophilia and concerns about getting cut while shaving, but because of Russian tradition. There is a tradition of beards in Russia. In a movie I saw once about Peter The Great, Peter's son referred to men's beards as a gift from God. Russian Traditions were very important to Nicholas and that is an attitude he probably handed down to his son. So based on Russian Tradition my sense is that Alexei would have grown a beard.

Well... as people mention here it was indeed the fashion of the day. But if Alexei did become tsar it would have been the start of 20st century. Style would proably had changed over there, so his fashion might have too. Interesting question and matter to think of though.  :)
