Prince Alexander Dolgoruky, Adjutant-General to the Emperor
« on: January 16, 2009, 09:05:50 AM »

Hi,

I'm new here and happy to see, that there are so many others who are interested in the last Romanovs and their time!

I was wondering was happened to Prince Alexander Dolgoruky, Adjutant-General to the Emperor and Ilya Tatischev, Adjutant-General to the Emperor after they were arrested in Jekaterinburg. Were they executed like so many others?

Thanks for information!

Thank you for the information, ashdean!

Was he a uncle or cousin of Princes Sophia (Sofka) Dolgoruki?

He was the first cousin of Prince Peter,Sofka D's father but through his mother.
Princess Mary D (died Nice 1936)had first married a Dolgoruky cousin by whom she had Alexander and his brother.Widowed young she(much later) married Count Paul Benckendorff  ( he died as they left Russia in 1921) Mary's brother Prince Alexander was the father of Prince Peter (who died in 1925) and Prince Serge (d 1933),the Dowager Empresses chamberlain who (with his widowed mother, daughter and neice Sofka) accompanied Marie Feodorevna out of Russia in April 1919.

If you look further down this section on the Count Benkendorff section there might be more of interest.

  yussupov29,

I share your interest in Prince Dolgoruky as well as in almost all those associated with the Romanov Imperial Family. But there are several corrections that should be made to the statement of the topic itself. First, the man in question is Vasily Dolguruky, not Alexander Dolgoruky. Coincidentally, the years of his life are 1868-1918, exactly the same as Emperor Nicholas himself. I don't know the date of his birth but he is reported to have been shot to death just a week before Nicholas himself and his whole family and their servants. And by an assassin who stood just a few feet from the animals who shot up and bayoneted Nicholas, Alexandra, Alexei, and the four daughters.

In other words, it was not Yurovsky who killed  Prince Vasily (known as "Valya" by friends and associates) but Grigori Nikulin. Nikulin led the Prince across a slightly wooded field under the pretext of having to reach a road or railroad beyond. This was why Dolgoruky was carrying a heavy suitcase with him. Nikulin shot and killed the Prince and , in a reported comment about the murder, our Grigori was quite irked to then have to lug the dead man's suitcase back across the field himself in order to obtain(steal) its contents.

Rodney G,

thank you for your reply and correction. But was there also a Alexander D.? Maybe a cousin of the Vasily in question?

yussupov29,

Quite possibly there was an Alexander Dolgoruky. It was an aristocratic family of wealth and prestige and of course Alexander was a popular Russian male name. I wondered by your use of the given name Alexander if we were talking about different men, but there was only one adjutant-general  to Nicholas II named Alexander who died in 1918 and that was 'Valya'. I hope you find your Alexander.

Alexander was Vassilys sole sibling..he was also murdered during the revolution.

I remember this story too..except I think it was TWO heavy suitcases that the murderer was miffed about carrying. I am sorry if I got the assasin wrong..its my memory playing tricks as I was away from my reference books.

ashdean,

My recollection of Dolgoruky's murder was just that, a remembrance of having read  it somewhere previously without the reference at hand. So you could well be right about there being two heavy suitcases that VD had been lugging. If you can recall the source  I'd like to be reminded so I might check it again.
