Definitely NOT a Silly Question
« on: January 23, 2009, 01:11:09 PM »
Anyone who knows the history of the USA knows the importance of its political and business dynasties, to the point that I don't need to name any names, because everybody knows about them.
That dynasticist phenomenon is typical of all non-monarchic countries. For ex, in Colombia, the Restrepo family--a family that includes politicians, military men, businessmen, churchmen and writers--is so important that about half of the presidents of Colombia are related to it. If Colombia ever decides to become an hereditary monarchy, the obvious inevitable choice for royal family will be the House Restrepo.
'tis really remarkable how dynasties are so important in non-monarchic countries; in fact, the case can be made that dynasties are totally essential for the wellbeing of all countries--so long, of course, as we are not talking about quasi-crime families such as the Castros, the Duvaliers, the Somozas and the Trujillos.
How is it in your countries? Which dynasties do you have that play a key role in your political and business societies?

Very interesting point! I agree with you. There are a lot of countries with dynasties - families who play an excellent role in the economic and social life of these societies.

Like the Kennedy family or the Bush-Clan, the Rockefellers, Guggenheims, Vanderbilts etc. in the U.S.A.

Here in Germany there are such families, but after the WW II they are not that much in the public focus like in other countries. Most of them live remote from the public and media.

We had for example the Krupp family, but with Arndt von Bohlen und Halbach died the last Krupp in 1986.

I will have to think about this intersting topic.  Yes, the USA,  like many other countries, have financial dynasties. The Vanderbilts, the Woolworths, etc. but just how powerful are/were they?  The Hearst family was considered  very powerful at one point, but the never achieved any political power, despite all their wealth. This is probably trues, as has been mentioned, everywhere.  Vastly wealthy families tend to shun the public eye. I do not blame them.

Could somebody post it there? I put it here because I could not find a suitable place for it.

Laura's studying in Russia this semester -- not sure whether she'll be on the AP much until she gets back.
