There were rumours that GD Vladimir also was Matilda's lover but only rumours nothing more. In fact GD Vladimir was not a sort of a man to cheat on his wife and his wife was not a woman to permit her husband any real adultery, only high-society flirt as it was in case with Olga Pistolkors,future Princess Paley and wife of GD Pavel.

Hi Svetabel,

Yes, I agree with you about Vladimir;  he seems to have been an honourable gentleman, interested in the arts and science.

And, like you, I cannot see Maria Pavlovna putting up with any fooling around.
Heads would have rolled - - if not Vladimir's, then the lady in question!!

Yes, I believe she was against the marriage at first. It's been awhile since I read everything, but I remember reading that in a caption to a photo in one of Charlotte Zeepvat's books, either Camera and the Tsars or Queen Victoria's family.
