Do we have a year?

I found it on a Hungarian verssion of wikipedia labeled as 1880, I don't know how reliable is it but I think that it was likely taken on that decade, Pss Zinaida looks very young.

Thank you for Alyss Kande for posting the first one, I was looking for it too!! :)

But I still find both the activities and photos of the German family visits more compelling. Especially 1909/1910.

I'm afraid I haven't read much about those visits. It would be interesting to find out more about what Nicholas thought of William then, compared to the earlier letters that tend to receive the attention in biographies.

Could you provide some photos? :D

1909? Is there a higher quality version of the photo with the whole family? I have one version that's better but it only includes the left half.

1910?

I'm glad KarinK has been able to post those photos of the IF in Germany. I'm not very good at posting photos so I can't help much. What I had in mind are photos from IF  visits to places from Alexandra's childhood , like Darmstadt and Wolfsgarten in Hesse, where the IF spent family holidays in a relaxed and warm family environment. These were probably most common with Alexandra's brother Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig and his wife and daughter Elisabeth and sons Ludwig and Georg Donatus.

The IF visited these places nearly every year in the  early 1900s. There are loads of great photos of the IF at play and relaxing, especially in 1909, 1910.

Maybe you could search using the keywords "Wolfsgarten ,Imperial Family Visits, Photos." "Photos of IF in Germany" , etc. Good luck; the search is worth it. And, basically, anyone else, help!

I completely forgot about Hesse! My mind was stuck on "royal visit" after the Romania photos and jumped from that to "Kaiser": I guess I associate the Hesse relatives with family holidays even though they too were foreign royalty. IIRC, the latest Rare Pictures thread has a lot of lovely new photos from the Hesse archive.

These visits must be responsible for most of the photos of the Tsar in a suit. He and Ernest usually look as though they're getting on well.

Does anyone have a better version of this one?

Abso-abso-lutely, KarinK! Those are the ones I had in mind :) Aren't they great? Both the families and the photos? And there are many more such golden ones at Rare Pictures and the Hessian State Archives, as you noted. Glad you could find them.

They must have had a great time there and I'll bet Alix was very happy.

They call that "mufti". What a strange word for "civilian clothes" - anyone know what the origin is?

They call that "mufti". What a strange word for "civilian clothes" - anyone know what the origin is?

"The word originates from the Middle East and is Arabic: Mufti means an Islamic scholar who is an interpreter or expounder of Islamic law (Sharia), and is the active form of the Arabic afta, meaning "to judge". It has been used by the British army since 1816 and is thought to derive from the vaguely Eastern style dressing gowns and tasseled caps worn by off-duty officers in the early 19th century. Yule and Burnell's Hobson-Jobson: A Glossary of Colloquial Anglo-Indian Words and Phrases, and of Kindred Terms, Etymological, Historical, Geographical and Discursive (1886) notes that the word was "perhaps originally applied to the attire of dressing-gown, smoking-cap, and slippers, which was like the Oriental dress of the Mufti"."
