According to Gilliard's memoirs, the IF heard about Lenin's rise to power in mid-November 1917, during their stay in Tobolsk:

"About November 15th we learnt that the Provisional Government was overthrown and that the Bolsheviks had again come into power."

I think, they could have heard about him - maybe with the letters that "Crimeans" sent to them.

In 'Romanovy : Ventsenosnaya Semia' Nicholas and Alexei were having wood, and talked about about Lenin (in Tobolsk):

A: Who is Lenin?
N: A leader of Bolshevicks ....
A: Is he a good man?
