Gleb Botkin, role?
« on: February 12, 2009, 12:03:06 PM »
I can't make up my mind on him, in my past readings I always get a different portrait of him. Did he truly believed Anna Anderson claim? Or was it a con he set-up?

My impression only:  I think that he DID believe initially, because he WANTED to, but perhaps it waned as time and disappointments/setbacks occurred.    Regards,  AP

I think I'm leaning that way too, I think Gleb suffer alot during the revolution and wanted that link. I'm alittle curious though, did Gleb ever asked AA about his father and that night?

Concerning "that night," I do not recall hearing/reading that he did directly ASK her, probably thinking that it would be too painful for both himself and the "Grand Duchess" (of course, feeling that she WAS the GD AN).  Regards,  AP

Yes, that seems right... Did he ever knew what happen to his father though? Did he and his family ever had a funeral? Or was the body found with the others during the 90's.

Dr. Botkin“s body was foun din the mass grave in 1991 with most of the members of Imperial family. Also the bodies of Kharitonov, Demidova and Trupp were there.

As time and contacts/information became available, I am certain that he knew the basics. Among other things during the very early investigation, portions of what was said to be the doctor's glasses and his upper denture were recovered.  I have no idea if a memorial service was later conducted.  The body of the good doctor was found at the same time and place of the Imperial Family and the others of the retinue.    Regards,  AP

I might have had positive feelings about him but them I remember how he treated the remaining members of the Imperial family in exile and then cannot forgive. Sad that he became a problem when his Father and family had served the Tsar and they dynasty with distinction. I think his father might be ashamed on reflection.

Yes, he said that the Imperial family did not care about "Anastasia", who had suffered so much.

I don't know.... I think his children all died, since if Gleb had been alive then he would be 98 years old! Maybe his grand children or great grand children attended.

On Wikipedia it says that Gleb died in December 1968. There's a photo of him there too  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Botkin,Gleb.jpg.

Had he lived until 1991 it would only support him in his deluded belief in AA.

Botkin had a son who died at front, in 1914/5, I think, in his last letter he said he saw a ghost of him. Tatiana wrote memories about IF. Many relatives were presented at IF funreal in 1998, Kharitonov's grandson, I think.
