Nicky the avid photographer, ca. 1910.

I know is the uniform, but the man who is fixing the camera for Nicholas seems to have a tail...Did you notice it?  :D

It's a strap holding his sword.

By the way, the negative is reversed in this photo, as both the lyadunka and sword are on the wrong side.

One that depicts the Tsar in a quite different way -that is, not the glamorous one, the oficial one, etc- but, from my point of view, that is simply outstanding, as we see him as a common human being, a father with his children.

The more I see and learn about him, the bigger my admiration and fascination about him becomes. I'm in love with this family, I can't help.

I just regret it's so painfully small that makes so hard recognizing him and the little children.

Yup, that's definitely Nicholas II. I believe that photo was taken around 1914.

This one you mean?

Yes, I think is the Czar, indeed. Perhaps is a photo made at close range, so we so many features of his face and may make us think he looks older.

Could it be that he spent a great deal of time in the sun? That can and does increase wrinkles gives the complexion a leatherly appearance.

 :D

Aloha all!

I think that the Tsar's appearance (especially in this very detailed picture) is due to his dedication to outdoor exercise and a very great deal to do with his incessant cigarette smoking also!  Probably more of the latter than the former in fact!   ::)

As attractive as I've always thought Nicholas was, the descriptions of his dental problems always gross me out!  I think a lot of that had to do with the tobacco addiction too.

I don't like the dentist anymore than the next person, but jeez!  (I just went to the dentist yesterday, so maybe that is on my mind more today!)   :-X

Anyone know who the other gentlemen are in this picture?  Sarushka?

The man on the left is the king of Romania -- I've forgotten his name! -- but I don't know who the other fellow is.

Does anyone know how much he smoked a day?

I have know heavy smokers who do not have this appearance, as well as people who spend a great deal of time in the sun. A friend of the family who passed recently did not smoke but was a real sunbather she was 5 years younger than her husband and yet she looked older. I remember her when I was a child, dark leathery complexion and a lot of wrinkles
