Does anyone know how much he smoked a day?

I've often read Nicholas II referred to as a chain smoker by his contemporaries (Sandro, for example), but I've never run across any actual numbers of cigarettes per day.

I've heard that Nicholas had pretty horrible teeth, and I saw a picture of him once, years ago, smiling with his mouth open... does anyone have this?

By chance, perhaps is it this one?

I mean, you can't see his teeth that well, but he is smiling with his teeth showing...slightly. I LOVE it when I see pics of them like this!  ;D

 :D

Aloha once more!

Sarushka -- thanks for the identification of Carol I to Nicholas's left -- I knew you'd have an answer for me and you didn't disappoint!   ;D  So that was Marie of Romania's father-in-law?

I too don't know how many cigarettes Nicholas smoked in a day, but since it is always so prominently mentioned in any biography or contemporary description of him, I'd bet that it was a lot!  (Plus it seems like he is smoking in almost all the video clips that I have seen)  Sun damage can certainly age you -- I live in Hawai'i (land of perpetual sun!) and I can certainly testify to that!   ::)

As far as dental problems go -- I try not to think about just what his teeth might have actually looked like!  At least in his later years.   :-X

One of my absolute favorites -- I love seeing him with his dogs

Ah, OTMA, it wasn't that one; in the picture I remember he had his hat off and it appeared that he was wearing either a white jacket or his tennis photos shirt. It was quite close up too.

But thanks anyways, that's a great picture!

I believe that's Nicholas and King Vittorio Emmanuel of Italy.

I know I have that photo in one of my books, and it must be labeled (otherwise I never would have known that was the king of Italy with Nicholas) but I haven't been able to find it. So far I know it's not in Prince Michael's book, or Radzinsky's. I don't think it's in Peter Kurth's Tsar, either. I'll let you know if I figure it out.

Yes, it's me again... ::)

While hunting for a date on that other photo, I came across this one:

It's captioned in Radzinsky's The Last Tsar as "Nicholas on a bicycle, in captivity, in Tobolsk, Siberia, 1917." I have a VERY hard time believing that Nicholas was ever allowed the freedom to ride a bicycle in Tobolsk. (Besides, there are plenty of other errors in Radzinsky's captions, so I'm pretty sure he's mistaken on this one, too.) Does anyone else know when this photo might actually have been taken?
