Also because they were underdogs apart from being Archduchess Sofie's pet hates.

I've read that Sissi also became interested on Hungary because her mother in law disliked them, so
she started learning more about them for being against Archduchess Sophie

Part of it. Another reason was that they made a fuss about her and Sisi did look good in Hungarian clothes.

But there are paintings of younger Sissi  (after being crowned queen of Hungary) wearing beautiful
hungarian traditional style dresses, she looked lovely with them, I read that she liked to wear the
hungarian dresses

Sisi knew she looked good in Hungarian costume early in her marriage. The fact that they do not demand too much from her further gained her liking.

But Sissi looked very well with all the clothes, jewels and hairdos that she loved to wear ;-)

The Hungarian clothes made her look special.

Not only that, Franz Josef first saw Sisi in mourning in Bad Isal. She was wearing mourning for some aunt, and he fell for her then.

Sissi was in mourning for her uncle Frederick Augustus II of Saxony who died in an accident some weeks before she met Franz Joseph.

Sorry, Paola, but Friedrich August died in August 1854 when Elisabeth and Franz Joseph had already been married for about four months.

Yes, MarieCharlotte you are right. Just checked this after sending my post. I always thought it was for the king she was in mourning. Do you for who she was in mourning then?
