The Emperor with his grandchildren on Easter. In the background you can see Marie Valerie with her husband, 1910.

Busts of Franz and Sisi.

I suppose, that the woman on the picture is Empress Elisabeth, but who is the man by her side?
Could anybody identify him?

It's Franz Joseph himself. The couple is pictured while leaving the the so-called "Badeschloss" in Bad Gastein on 8 July 1886, where they met Wilhelm I. and Otto von Bismarck. Elisabeth looks quite happy in this pic and she doesn't hide her face.
Ich aber breite trauernd aus
die weiten weissen Schwingen,
Und kehr' ins Feenreich nach Haus -
Nichts soll mich wieder bringen.

Is the man really Franz Joseph? Somewhere I have read, that he was tall like Elisabeth or a bit shorter then she. But on the picture he looks quite tall.

Yes, it's really him. Franz Joseph was a little smaller than his wife, but in this pic he is wearing this huge helmet which makes him look taller.

Of course MarieCharlotte, if you have some photos with them togather, you can post them. At least we can compare.
But anyway I think, that the helmet does not make impression, that he is taller. When you look at the picture carefully, you can see his shoulder and head is much higher then her. And they stay also on same step.

Absolutely! I've seen another one when they were in their old age (Elisabeth in black with an umbrella).

I found six photographs showing Elisabeth and Franz Joseph together. Unfortunately I wasn't able to scan one of them.

The famous family group (Schönbrunn, 1859):
standing: Franz Joseph, Ferdinand Max, Charlotte of Belgium, Ludwig Victor, Carl Ludwig
sitting: Elisabeth with Rudolf and Gisela, Sophie, Franz Carl

Elisabeth (left, on horseback) with Franz Joseph (right, on horseback) and Napoléon III. (standing next to Elisabeth's horse) and Eugénie (in the middle, on horseback) - Salzburg, ca. 1867

In 1888 the statue of Maria Theresia was unveiled in Vienna. Elisabeth and Franz Joseph are in this pic, too. The author Gabriele Praschl-Bichler thinks that Elisabeth is the woman in the middle of the picture who has a black fan in her hand. I don't think so, because this woman is wearing a white dress - and as you know, Elisabeth has only worn black since her son Rudolf commited suicide.

Elisabeth and Franz Joseph somewhere in Hungary, 1896
