True. According to Charlotte Zeepvat, at the very least the empress Maria Alexandrovna has been inserted into this to this portrait by hand. Zeepvat also acknowledges it's possible that this is a composite of many different poses, so perhaps this entire group never posed together at all. At any rate, it's the only image I'm aware of in which both Alexander II and the future Nicholas II appear together.

HI Clockworkgirl,  Those are great photos.  Alix and Nicholas visited Ernie and Ducky several days after their engagement, and that is where the 4-some photo comes from.  Interesting that Nicholas tentatively has his hand on Alix' shoulder, but Ernie does not do the same with Ducky. The top one with all the navy uniforms was taken previously or later, I am sure, as it includes all of Nicholas' family, even Georgy, and Xenia stands in front of Nicholas.  How interesting to see the signatures on the classic one of the 2 of them -- she has learned to sign her name in Russian!

Could anyone send me a link or tell me the thread (photo) that Alexandra is sitting in Nicholas lap kissing? I have looked everywhere for it! and the year? Also what year is the second photograph from?

Nicholas and Alexandra are the ones on the photo's right-hand side. Xenia is sitting on her husband Sandro's lap and kissing on the left-hand side.

Didn't he go to the beach too, when he visted England?  :-[

If you mean Cowes for the visit, no, Nicholas did not "go to the beach".  That was generally only in Finland.  The Vyroubova albums at the Beineke Library, Yale, which are available online for free, have dozens of such pictures of Nicholas on the beach and swimming.

Nicholas II is here? I don't know.

Thanks for photos, Irina.

Aloha all!

I just had to post this picture as it has to be one of my absolute favorites of Tsar Nicholas II and his sister Olga - adapting the posture of a Roman emperor - such a fun picture!

No matter what anyone says - I think the man had a wonderful sense of whimsy and humor!

Thank you Irina for photos!

Not on the beach, but near, I guess:

I think one of him with Olga A. comes from Prince Michael's book. It is interesting photo, Crimea, ca. 1913. ?

Correct. It was likely August or September.
