Feuds, feuds and more feuds
« on: March 11, 2009, 01:51:53 PM »
A propos the conversations in the Vladimir thread about feuds among Romanovs, I thought it would be amusing to list a few of the poisonous relationships in the last two generations.....(if anyone can bear the bile!)

Alexander III loathed his uncle Konstantin Nikolaevich
Alexander III also hated his uncle Nikolai Nikolaevich senior
Maria Feodorovna hated Maria Pavlovna
Maria Pavlovna hated or depised Maria Feodorovna
Olga Feodorovna despised or looked down on Maria Feodorovna
Nikolai Mikhailovich hated Nikolai Nikolaevich junior
Nikolai Mikhailovich hated Anastasia, wife of Nikolai Nikolaevich junior
Nikolai Mikhailovich was not over-fond of Alexandra Feodorovna
Alexandra Feodorovna did not like Nikolai Mikhailovich
Alexandra Feodorvna fell out with Anastasia and Nikolai Nikolaevich junior
Maria Feodorovna did not like Alexandra Feodorovna
Alexandra Feodorovna did not like Miechen
Victoria Feodorovna did not like Alexandra Feodorovna
Alexander Mikhailovich hated Sergei Alexandrovich
Alexander Mikhailovich despised most of his relations, in fact.....

And on it goes...... :)

WOW!...Oh my God!, I have to admit that it looks like an old TV series like "Dallas."
My question is this: there was someone who liked someone other, or they were all, as we say here in Italy "Snake relatives \ Parenti serpenti"?

Oh yes, there were some firm friendships:
Alexandra Feodorovna and Elisabeth Mavrikievna
Peter Nikolaevich and George Mikhailovich;

plenty of friendsips that came apart in later days:

Nicholas II and Alxander Mikhailovich
Alexandra Feodorovna and both Montennegrin sisters; and so on.....

but the emnities are funnier, in  a dark way.....
A few more:

Olga Feodorovna had little respect for her husband's intellect and didn't really like anyone, including most of her own children;
her favoured children, Alexander Mikhailovich and Nikolai Mikhailovich, took after her in regard of not liking or respecting anybody they were related to;
Maria Pavlovna didn't like Victoria Feodorvna (her daughter-in-law)
or Mathilde Kschesinska (son's mistress, later her daughter-in-law);
or her other son's mistress
or her son-in-law (much)...... :)
In return, it seems that not many people liked Maria Pavlovna......

Maria feodorvna had catty things to say of Elisabeth Feodorovna; including:
Elisabeth Feodorovna was jealous of Elisabeth Mavrkievna.    ::)

Thanks for starting this thread Janet, very interesting.

I'm aware of at least some of the facts on most of those mentioned, but know nothing about Alexander III's dislike of these 2 uncles.  Could you expand on the details in these cases?

Like in Razdinsky's book:

Moscow's Clique -- Ella, GD Nicholas, GD Xenia Alexandrovna, 'vs' Alexandra Feodorovna, who firstly had good relationship with Stana and Militsa.

In 1916, NIi was against Felix Yussupov and GD Dmitrii Pavlovich, Zinaida Yussupov also against Alexandra Feodorovna. Interesting topic, I have to add, thanks, Janet Ashton!

I suppose this is because the murder of Rasputin.

Yes, it is. Also, almost all members of Nicholas' family became a bit against FY and DP.

Well, some of the reasons AIII disliked Konstantin Nicholaevich was because of his liberal views and because of his second family. After AIII came to the throne KN was made to resign from his post as grand admiral.

The Nicholaevichi branch in general was disliked by the Vladimiroviches, something that continued after the revolution.

Why was Elisabeth Feodorovna jealous of Elisabeth Mavrkievna?

In 1891 GD Sergei was leaving for Moscow for his governorship and naturally divested himself from his  Colonelcy-inChief of privileged Preobrazhenskiy Regiment. GD Konstantin K. became the new Chief and his wife GDss Elizaveta M. was overjoyed with such a change in their life.
So someone began to spread rumours that GDss Ella was jealous of her namesake's preparing to be the first lady of the Regiment.

And Chairman of the State Council. Alexander replaced him with Mikhail Nikolaevich, who had no illusions about his nephew's respect for him either: "He wants me to sit in the chair like a turkey" (and not rock any boats).
To blow my own trumpet, here is my Konstantin article: -

http://www.directarticle.org/Konstantin1.html      :)

The other brother, Nikolai Nikolaevich senior, was known to "love all women except for his wife" and was up to his eyes in debt. I have a friend who wrotea thesis on the political role of the Grand Dukes, and he says or quotes (I forget which) that all Grand Dukes were usually stereotyped in gossip as hero, villain, clown or nonentity. We think then that among Nichalas I's sons Alexander is seen as hero, Konstantin as villain (which is nonsense, but in his lifetime there were always stories impugning his loyalty to Alexander), which leaves Mikhail as nonentity and the ludicrous Nikolai as clown. Nikolai managed to fall out with Alexander II over military reform (the only brother who actually had a rift with him), and Alexander III soon relieved him of all his posts.

Yes, this is what I was thinking of too. Maria Feodorovna seems to have been one of the "someones" because she commented to Nihcolas (see Bing-edited letters for example) that when people teased Ella, saying Mavra would be "Regiment Mother" in her place, Ella went pink with rage.

I think MF also includes in this gruop against Vyrubova and Empress.
