Yes, he liked to walk :) I don't know about it, but I can tell you that there was a chin-up bar installed in the Tsar's bathroom, as well as one in the Grand Duchess's bathroom. There's a picture of Anastasia hanging from it on the photo album on this site.

Tsar Nicholai was also a very adept horse-rider. He enjoyed brisk riding sessions around the Livadia estate.

He was passionate about walking, played tennis and swam.

A published photograph shows him with Grand Duke Michael poised over a suspension bar which was set up on the Standart. It shows his stenghth and agility more than adequately.

While imprisoned in both Tsarskoe Selo and Tobolsk there are numerous photographs of the Tsar sawing timber logs and shovelling snow. All those earlier exercise programs proved to be a bonus for him to carry out these mundane tasks more readily!

He was an extremely fit individual .... pity that despite all these activities he enjoyed an occassional cigarette!

;)

I love the picture of Nicholas and Michael on the Standart that BELOCHKA was talking about, its one of my favorites.  It is in Edvard Radzinsky book The Last Tsar.  Alexandra is really laughing and that is really unusual.  But Radzinsky mislabeled the photo, it says Countess Natalia is in the picture......everyone knows that Alexander would not have met with Natalia anywhere much less the Standart.  (Unless I've got my Natalia's mixed up, Michaels wife is who I am thinking about)

Arleen, I know what you are talking about! The caption reads: Nicholas, Alexandra, Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich, and his future wife Countess Natalia Sheremietevskaya frolicking on the deck of the Standart.

As far as I know this never happend.

After reading of Nicholas love of walking, tennis, swimming, of the gym bar in his bathroom, and working out and swimming daily for two hours myself, I knew that Nicholas would be super fit. Even knowing all this, I was still stunned when I saw in Anna Vyrubova's albums the photographs of Nicholas in his tennis whites with his sleeves rolled up! The muscles of his arms were incredibly defined and hard! I swear I can see them ripple!!!! And it is funny too the tan of his hands against the white of his arms! How Nicholas loved the sun!!!

Nicholas wasnt a Eugene Sandow, the 1st  well known body builder, but he  seems to have been  strongly well built from his exercise. Its too bad that Alexandra, and Alexis could not have had an regular exercise program.Would have made their lives alot easier Im sure.

The photograph to which I was refering is from:

The Flight of the Romanovs. The authors more correctly stated in their caption that one of the one of the women apart from Alix was unidentified.

One curiosity when comparing the same photographs between the two books however is fascinating ... they are mirror images! Someone has reversed the negative. I wonder who?

;D

To JM ...

You missed my 2 points. The two photos are reversed in both books:

1.  ... comparing the same photographs between the two books however is fascinating ... they are mirror images! Someone has reversed the negative.

I am fully aware that the photo is supposed to be the same.

My second point was that:

Radzinsky and Steinberg/Khrustale'v provided slightly different captions as well. The S & K caption is more accurately described.

;)

My question following from the discussion above is:

Which orientation of that photograph is the correct one?

???

Belochka, the S & K caption is more accurate. That is my opinion at any rate.

I missed two points :o!

Yes I agree with you JM.

At least the authors S & K were honest enough not to speculate who the second lady may have been.

It certainly was not Natalia Wulfert who never set foot on the Standart.

;)
