Dear Friends,

Thank you for your prompt and courteous responses to this, my first post on this forum.

As I had never seen any evidence of HIM Tsar Nikolai smoking a pipe, I rather suspected that, had he done so, there would be ample photographic material to support it.

I look forward to getting to know all of you better.

In Christ,
Br. Nikolai Steblez (Yelenev-Gorlenko)

You're welcome. Your page and photo reference numbers made it very easy to find. With such precise references to follow, I'm happy to scan anything by request that I can fit into my scanner without damage to the book.

Yes indeed, I second Aleksandr Pavlovich's thanks Sarushka. How fascinating. I wonder why a 90 degree bend rather than the usual straight-ahead cigarette holder?

It's so typical of us Russians, my dear Aleksandr Pavlovich, our peculiarities are like our language - we've got a different word for everything... ;)

Why did he allow his daughters use cigarettes? I'm always wondering why...

In those days, the use of tobacco was looked upon differently. In addition, while there were those who smoked cigarettes in large quantities, many smoked them in great moderation, much like one might smoke a cigar or a pipe today - as a treat rather than an all-day thing.

So, the people before are even more better than the ones these days. Thanks for that immediate reply, Sir Br. Nikolai!

Would you mind if I asked what is flummeriey?

Flummery is a sweet soft pudding that is made from stewed fruit and thickened with cornstarch.

Traditional British flummeries were like porridge as they were often oatmeal based and cooked to achieve a smooth and gelatinous texture; often sugar and milk were added and occasionally orange flower water. The dish is typically bland in nature. The dish gained stature in the 17th century where it was prepared in elaborate molds and served with applause from the dining audience. The writer Bill Bryson described flummery as an early form of blancmange in his book Made in America.
