Please forgive me AGRBear if this is slightly off what you were asking, but your post reminded me of another site I once saw (though I can no longer find it) which said something similar about Grand Duke Serge importing & breeding a particular kind of dog (which If I remember rightly was named after him  :-/.) I would be be very grateful if any one could add to the information AGRBear is seeking with any other info. too about Serge's dogs.

I have a picture, too, of Ella standing in front of some very small children at her orphanage & beside her there is a small rather scruffy looking little dog...does anyone know anything about it, please, & if she had any others.  :)
If there were dogs & other animals at the convent, I wonder what happened to them during the Revolution.  :(

I don't know the answer about Serge's dogs.  But sure, why not talk about them here, too.

For some reason, when you mentioned Serge the old Irish Wolfhounds poped into my head.  I think they were from the breed which started the Borzoi [sp/].  I may be ALL wrong...

Seems like I remember reading somewhere about a royal animal [horses?]  cemetery.  Was it for the IF families or some other royal family?

I remember seeing one at Potsdam, I think it was, for Fred. II The Great's dogs.

I think I might have some pictures of Iman on my home computer. Perhaps I'll post them when I go home.

I found this:

Samoyeds and the Romanovs - under The Imperial Family thread.

Imperial Pets-Joy - under Servants, Friends and Retainers thread.

I hope it helps...

Bluetoria, is the dog in your picture the same as this one below? I love this picture of Ella and the dog (is it a jack russell?):

Yeah, Helen  :D  That's the one - great isn't it?  :) It might be a Jack Russell but it still looks small & sort of scruffy  :)

What a wonderful photo of Ella and the doggie!!  Looks like it could be a Jack Russell - but I'm not really sure.  Thanks for posting that picture, Helen :)

Nose is rather short but the lenght of fur and height of the dog seems to fit closer to an older variety of  hunting Fox terrier and probably an ancestor of the Jack Russel.

Maybe it was just a mongrel...It would have been kind of appropriate to have some little stray dog there, don't you think?  :)

Some of the British workers and trainers in the Imperial stables/farm bred puppies and sold them.  It goes back to the reign of Catherine II.  Different breds were popular at different times.  I think this is where the 'Imperial' origins of some of these breeds comes from.  Also, most of the dogs owned by generations of Romanovs came from the Farm.

Voron and Iman had puppies - I don't know what happened to them.

So far I know the Imperial family had parrots, tropical fish, dogs, cats, doves, rabbits, - can we also add the elephants to that list - I suppose they weren't household pets!!!

Years ago we found the reciepts for Aleksey's aquarium - I didn't know they had them in those days.

I always wondered what happened to poor Popov - Alexander III's parrot that Nicholas inherited.  He kept Popov in his bathroom most of the time.
