Ladies of the Winter Palace

Good evening everyone!

I am pasting a question I posted earlier under "Discussions about Russian History/Imperial Russian Antiques/Re: Romanov Items/Souvenirs that You Own" below because I am interested to see what replies I will get here as well.  I actually haven't gotten replies to my question yet in the other section, which is understandable since it has not been long since I posted, but I am looking forward to reading different answers from both threads.

Question:

I recently came across a thick volume entitled something like "The Ladies of the Winter Palace."  It looks (and smells =D) like a very old book...so old that I believe it doesn't include any background on the more recent Grand Duchesses though it seems like it might have been an authoritive text at one time and place.  It is in relatively good condition, especially considering how old the book is, and was marked at $30, which I think is a reasonable price.  Unfortunately, the author's name escapes me.  I am wondering if anybody is familiar with this text and can tell me if they think it would make a nice addition to my collection and whether they think the price is reasonable or even a great value.  Thank you in advance for any help!

BTW, I am not a "beginner" as far as contemporary Romanov-related books go.  I am more new to collecting old books that were published closer or during the time that the Romanovs actually were in power.

Thank you again for any help you can offer!

Best,

Stana

Hi Stana

I read this book many years ago. From memory it principally deals with the empresses Anna, Catherine the great etc. I thought it was a good read at the time but it's not about the grand duchesses or the 19th century Romanovs.  You may find the 2 volume "the russisan court in the 19th century" by Brayley more to your taste. It was originally published somewhere around 1908 I think.

Hi Katmaxoz,

Thank you so much for your reply and recommendation!  When I was originally taking a very quick look at the book, I thought that it did not cover the grand duchesses, but thank you for clarifying and I may just look into the other book as well!  Thanks for the link.

Best,

Stana
