10 Royals You Would Invite to a Dinner Party
« on: April 01, 2009, 06:49:10 PM »
After reading a post by Janet Ashton in the "Your Top 10 of Boring Royals" topic, I thought it would be interesting to explore which royals you would invite to dinner. No rules here...invite anyone you would like to know better, admire, probe for tidbits of information, etc. If you would like to explain each pick, please do!

Here is my list in no particular order:

Queen (Consort) Elizabeth, the Queen Mother
Queen (Consort) Alexandra
Queen (Consort) Mary
Queen Victoria
Queen Elizabeth I
Prince George, Duke of Kent
Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale
Czar Nicholas II
Czarina (Consort) Maria Feodorovna
Czarina Catherine (the Great)

Love it..... Oh what fun! I think it would have to be done five women...five men in the case of my party, in order to make my guests feel comfortable! I will do two lists...one of all royals across the ages and one of QV's family and contemporaries!

1. Mary Tudor, Duchess of Suffolk... fascinating woman
2. Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales...His patronage of the arts and bonhomie would ease my guests into the comfort zone hopefully!
3. Cleopatra.....Just to see if she was as fascinating as is claimed
4. Napoleon I .....I love to see how he would deal with sitting between 3 and 5!
5. Catherine the Great.....I wonder who would be top dog?
6. King John.... Just for the fun of seeing how mean he could be!
7. Queen Christina of Sweden.... Intriguing
8. King Sebastian of Portugal.....ditto
9. Katherine Swynford...My fave medieval woman
10. Alfred the Great

My QV family and contemporaries (kind of hodge podge!) guest list would be:-

1. Louise Fife.....Everyone knows why! I know she wont be the most scintillating of guests...but.. then at least my 'dog with a bone' curiosity may be satisfied!
2. Ernie Hesse.....He seems so generous and nice, maybe he could help put Louise at her ease!
3. Mary Adelaide Teck..... wonderful company hopefully
4. King Nicholas of Montenegro......such a wily and fascinating man!
5. Cookie.....such humour and sparkle! I'd have to get plenty of gin, dubonnet and bubbly in!
6. KR..... he would have us all enthralled!
7. Queen Wilhelmina ....wonderful woman!
8. Christian X of Denmark..... A hero!
9. VMH..... she would certainly keep the conversation going wouldn't she? And I personally regard her the most interesting of the 'Four Graces.'
10. Leopold II of the Belgians... Every setting needs a baddie!! I think him fascinatingly horrid! If he proves too repellant we could black-ball him and send him to Coventry!!!

Great topic!

I think having Queen Victoria and all her children to dinner would be fascinating.

What do you think the dinner conversation would be? How long would it take for the queen to light into Bertie? Would she mention the cow she named "Princess Alice" after she found out Princess Alice nursed her children herself? Would she express concern to Vicky over that brat of a grandchild, Wilhelm? I would wait breathlessly to see what she would say to the others.

Most excellent!!! I love your wit you two!

It would indeed be fascinating to sit around the table with Queen Victoria and her children. I'd love to see that women in action.

Thank you for your posts!

I thought about inviting Queen Victoria but then scratched her, because she was notorious for gobbling her food very quickly and expecting others to follow her cue as was her prerogative. Therefore, there was very little time for conversation at the dinner table with HM around.....no time at all really, as one tried to keep up with Her Majesty wolfing her food down, as footmen hovered ready to snatch plates away as the Queen finished 'her' course!!!! Perhaps in company with other crowned heads as dinner companions, QV may have tried to be a little more convivial...but I do wonder?!!!!

Interesting topic.  Equally interesting that nobody seems interested in inviting the present Queen to dinner  :o

Well, since I'm the hostess, the guests are supposed to take a cue from the hostess and I'm a VERY slow eater. :) Oh, she'd have time to talk, believe me.

If it was a real dinner party, the problem with inviting so many big personalities would be that they'd clash and vie for attention and domination of the conversation - imagine Queen Victoria and Elizabeth I at the same table! Or Diana, Princess of Wales and Empress Elisabeth of Austria for that matter!

I wonder, Prince_Lieven. I really do. Part of me believes they would behave in the way you mentioned, but the other part thinks that they would be highly reserved, sizing everyone up before speaking too freely. As a good hostess, I would definitely have talking points prepared to encourage the sharing of experiences while enforcing that we respect one another.

I think the "younger" royals (e.g., Mary, Alexandra, Maria, Victoria...all from my guest list) would be fascinated (along with me of course) to hear from the "older" royals (e.g., Catherine the Great, Elizabeth I) and vice versa.

Many of my picks are female. It would be nice to think that there would be a mutual admiration between them. Maybe I'm being a little too positive...who knows!!! It would be an incredible evening nonetheless. Let the Cristal champagne flow!!!
