EMPIRE OF THE TSARS, by Elizabeth Heresch
« on: April 03, 2009, 02:44:41 PM »
Is anyone familiar with this book:

EMPIRE OF THE TSARS: The Splendor and the Fall: Pictures and Documents 1896-1920
by Elizabeth Heresch
ISBN 3784423302
Publisher: Stroitel, Russia 1991

I have an opportunity to buy a copy at what seems to be a fair price, but I've never seen the book firsthand. (A family member on vacation ran across it and offered to bring it home for me.) My primary interest is in NAOTMAA's personal lives, and I have many of the major photo albums and print sources -- see which ones here. Is this book likely to have many unique documents and/or images?
THE LOST CROWN: A Novel of Romanov Russia -- now in paperback!
"A dramatic, powerful narrative and a masterful grasp of life in this vanished world." ~Greg King

I remember of the German edition when in Austria 'Das Zarenreich'. If you can buy for a fair price as it is in English, it would be worth it as Elizabeth Heresch is a superb author/researcher. It was published in early 90s so documents/photos have been superceded with archival information since. If it is of the children you are interested, she also wrote of Alexei - 'Alexej, der Sohne des letzten Zaren'. Again if you do find in English, it would be great as there may be gems within.

Also, E. Heresch did a book about Rasputin, I think.  ;-)

I am reading her book on Rasputin. It's quite interesting! I also liked her book on Alexei Romanow.

Did anyone read her book on Empress Alexandra?

I have read some books by Elisabeth Heresch. The one mentioned by Sarushka The Russian Empire wasen´t very interesting in my opinion. Also the photos were of rather bad quality. I read the German edition. I don´t know if the English version is better. I also read her biographies on Rasputin,Nicholas II and on Tsarevich Alexei. The one I liked best was the one on Alexei. Many lovely photos there! I also have a book on some Romanov palaces like Pavlovsk,Pushkin,Peterhof,Gatchina,Oranienbaum. ´Peterburger Zarenschlösser`. A splendid photo book with many nice colour photos. There is also a book soon to be published by Heresch these days on the whole Romanov dynasty.
