Alexei is tasting the sailors' lunch on the Standart.  It was a habit of the Emperor, which Alexei undertook as well, to taste the lunch of the regular men serving the Emperor, every day.  It was a way of showing the regular men that THEIR food was good enough even for the Emperor himself and a way for the Emperor to show his concern for his men, by showing he cared enough to taste their food to make sure it was good enough for them.  

Nicholas, and then Alexei as well, partook of this ritual every single day, wherever they were.

Woa, cool! I never saw that pictujre or knew that! So if the food was not good enough would they re-make it? You know, if the Tsar thought it should be better? :-/

I don't think he probably ever needed to. I am certain that since the cooks knew the Emperor would be tasting the food, they would always make sure it was good.

And notice something else--- Alexei was going barefoot--- good to see his mother felt it was safe to do so on the ship.  And she was even smiling at the humorous sight of her son doing his duty like his father.  This is a neat picture on so many levels.
