Now I am wondering about that photo with Alexis and Anastasia...they both looked tanned,( certainly he looks more so than in the bridge photos so it's at least another day  )  the awnings  are up, he has his gun... hmmmmm...perhaps that was taken in 1916. Imp has on a similar  outfit from the Petehof photo( though with diffrent stockings) and Alexis looks a bit younger

Interesting. Yeah it could easily be 1916 I suppose although the Imp looks a little more grown in that photo with Alexei than the one you just posted here BlessOTMA. Of course it's hard to really analyze the age differences between two relatively blurry black & white photos shot from a distance and having been taken probably no more than a year apart...

Oh while I was typing I see edubs31 posted! Thank you for working out the time frames! ...always a challenge for me!
Amazing AN got to keep his rifle that long!

My pleasure :-) And yes Alexei must have kept his rifle pretty well concealed if this photo was taken during captivity. Or maybe he just didn't bother wearing and playing with it outside until the weather warmed up. Average temps in St. Petersburg are over 60 in May and approaching 70 in June, but below 50 in April and typically quite chilly in March...

I am asking simply because the Heir was wearing the same uniform like in this one :

And the place is the same. Well , there are two possible options : - either these were both taken in 1917 (the second one surely was, it is in Anastasia's 1917 album) at the same time/place, or the first one was taken somewhere during the war. What do you think? There are several photos of Heir taken in 1917, with the same uniform, this included :

Both of these photos were taken in captivity at Tsarskoe Selo. They appear on the same page of Anastasia's 1917 photo album, visible on page 360 of Nicholas & Alexandra: The Last Imperial Family of Tsarist Russia.

Boys on the sledge: Sitting, from far left - Rostislav and Nikita. Behind them - from left : Vasili (standing) and Dmitri.
(I am almost sure for Nikita and Rostislav - Alexei adored him for most, once Alexei said to them (I mean to all his siblings, Xenia's sons): '' You all can go home'', since Rostislav didn't come at the palace at Livadia. :-D).
I had always thoght that Kolia Derevenko was present in the photo, but it seems he was not.

Xenia boys British tutor , Mr. Stewart, left 25 photo albums in a museum in Bradford England, which they just rediscovered...undoubtedly a treasure trove for those  interested in Xenia's family.  I'm hoping someday a relative of Gibbs will  find  something similar  in a forgotten trunk.  It's hard to believe photos were not sent home for family viewing  during his years as tutor

Can anyone tell me what they're actually doing in this photo? I assume it was taken in Mogilev around 1916.

He was playing on somthing like swing tire, I assume. He used to wrote "Today I played in the (city) garden" in Mogilev during 1916.

Thanks. I was curious because the angles make it look like both swings are attached to the same thing, so I was wondering how it worked.

You are welcome. Actually you are right, both swings are attached to the one trunk. In the book Tsesarevich you will find the fuller photo.

The same play:

The swings Alexei played on, worked something like this, exactly like you described (GD Ella is in the photo):

(Click on the photos). I am glad I helped you. ;-)

Ah, I see. Thanks again. I imagine I'd end up going face first into the trunk if I ever found myself on one.

I used to play on a swing like that in the local park when I was a kid. It had a number of ropes attached and they could all move freely round the top of the pole, so if you had several people on different ropes, and everyone ran round in the same direction, you left your feet, and we would all swing out and round a at a great pace.  Terrific fun, and felt like flying!  I hadn't thought about it for years.
