When and where was this one taken? It is labeled as '1917' but I need your thoughts.

I think it is thé Alexander palace 1917. First because we have other pictures with prince Dolgorouki ans this Gard, I Will post one alter on. Second because of the Tsar'decorations. He wore only bis St George's cross, without anything else. As for Maria she is very thin here. As she was after her illness. What do you think about this?

Here you have a picture with the same mens, without Maria. I do not know who is this little gard. Do you?

But where at the AP? It's not Alexandra's balcony- the floor doesn't match and the windows are too high. Here's a photo for comparison.

Could it be the terrace off of the Semi-Circular Hall?

My guess would also be that they're on the terrace outside the Semi-Circular Hall between two windows. The wall doesn't look straight.

Lovely! That might be the first proper profile of Maria with her hair up, in most photos she's facing the camera or wears a hat.

Beautiful photo.   It's one of the few where I can really see some of Alexandra's features in her.

Try as I might, I do not see Alix in Maria at all. In all her children her features mixed with others but still managed to "come victorious" somehow, but Maria, in my view, had nothing from her mother´s side at all. It was all Romanovs and Danish branch of the broad family in her face and body structure.

The more pictures of teenage and 1916-1918 Maria photos emerge, the more I see how distinct she was from her sisters (even Olga, though there was some resemblance there) and I hope some colour pictures will be found, because one can just sense how her natural colouring must have added to her loveliness (and her sisters too, naturally).

Where has this picture been all my (Romanov-viewing) life?

Marie slays me every time . Stunning !! Thank you! She wore her hair up on the yacht while on  vacation " well  before being 16  and doing so on the job in St. P .  I do see Alix in Marie...not as much as the others , (Perhaps it's because Marie always smiled lol ) but their mother can be seen on them all imo.  I would also say Alix father was a big man too,  so the size is coming from both sides of the family. Marie also looked a good deal like Alexi imo They smiled and looked merry the same way . Indeed, Mountbatten said their coloring added to their beauty and we know that was said of their Aunt Ella as well
