It's amazing the amount of new photos you can find on the net these days! You think you've seen them all and then a whole bunch suddenly appears.

Seeing all these new images on the net makes me upset that all the books use the same ones over and over when with a little extra research you can find a lot of new stuff. And now with digital taking over physical books its a real shame that many of these photos will never see a hand held page.

It has less to do with research and pretty much everything to do with expense.  It costs a fortune to research, and pay for permission to publish, the untapped material in archives within Russia.  People really have little idea if they are not out there trying for themselves.  I am sure any author on this forum will pretty much echo what I have written.

Absolutely true. Even photos within the USA aren't cheap — it's not uncommon to pay $100 or more for permission to print a single photo in a book. (Just because a photo is out of copyright doesn't mean anybody can print or post it online. Only those who own an original print may do as they please with it.) I can only imagine what GARF charges non-Russians for permissions on previously unpublished images.

Try as I might, I do not see Alix in Maria at all.
I agree - usually I don't see any resemblance to Alix in Maria - but there is something about the squint of Maria's eyes in the picture above that resembles a picture I've seen of a mature (maybe about 35-40 yr. old) Alix, I think one taken on the Standart, where their profiles are very similar.  By that age Alix's face was more fleshy.

The children's eyebrows had that same up ward motion as Alix . It's in their facial expressions that one sees their mother  The photo of Marie ,AN Alexi , Tatiana and the Tsar in a train yard from 1914 shows the children a"  what's next?  why me? "   Alix expression lol

LORD photos in books! Everything about it is hard  It's often hard to even track down a photo's owner in the first place in order to get the rights besides paying etc. Thank goodness for Yale or books wouldn't even have those . Also thank goodness for the Internet!

I am amazed by how the stones on the beach are so clearly visible. It was taken at Crimea during their visit to Livadia, certainly.

August 2, 1914. The Imperial Family comes out from the Winter Palace on the waterfront in the direction of the yacht “Standart”, after reading the manifesto.

Wow! What a stunning photo, showing all the tension, drama , and emotion of that historic occasion. Dear Marie seems worried or tense, though perhaps only by the press of the crowd.

Now that's a rare photo :)
