Wow, no kidding. I was thinking the EXACT same thing! The resemblance is striking. And not just because her hair is tucked up into that hat and she's featuring a slightly Tomboyish look.

As regards photo quality, it is all due to lighting and other factors, all of which were worked out and done manually in those days. Much of this is just done automatically by cameras now.

They look very much alike imo  particularly when they smile

Both Maria and Alexei inherited some of their looks from Alexander III. Alexei also had some of the Hessian feature too, while Masha had almost nothing from her mother.

Masha was all Minnie, in my humble opinion.
