To judge by the ages of those involved, this must have been taken fairly shortly before the outbreak of war.

Does anyone know when Ernst and the family last met? Presumably he and Nicholas met at Victoria Louise's wedding, but Nicholas went there by himself.

Diffidently 1914 imo ...they were dressed that way while on Standart ..yet here they are on a roof top it seems

It can't be spring, since the war started in July /early August.(OT are wearing nurse uniforms)
 It could be late summer or even fall of 1914. Also, Maria started wearing her hair down in first half of 1914. There is photo of Tsar and Heir taken at the AP balcony from AF 's album labeled as 1915, and it is very similar to those two with GD Michael. But I' d also say 1914.

It seems that they are wearing the same outfits as the ones posted above. Based on the length of Tatiana's hair in these, we can definitely say that it's 1914.

It's a closeup from a bigger photo. I think that's Ernst in the background, the photo could be from his 1912 visit (there's other photos of him and Nicholas on the tennis court).

I looked at my half-forgotten Russian-language history bookmarks (I've been slowly going through a couple of photo archives and ignoring the rest) and found a site that has these new photos and more, including good-quality versions of some of my all-time favourites.  I can't believe it! I'll probably be posting quite a lot of stuff here and on Tumblr in the next days, but now I'm busy clicking and saving.

I think it's Sablin, he's with them in another tennis court photo where Maria and Anastasia look like they're dressed the same way as here.

I agree. Maybe it's only fitting that Marie should be the unfortunate recipient of a lot of those tarnished and blemished photos...because there is simply no tarnishing and blemishing of her!

This is like seeing another photo from the 1914 formals. Often when I see a photo of Marie, like Nicholas, I wonder was she wholly human?
